Pennsylvania AFL-CIO leaders oppose key governor priorities

The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO on Tuesday rolled out a legislative agenda that clashes -- not unexpectedly -- with the priorities of Republican Gov. Tom Corbett and many of his GOP allies who control the Legislature, as the federation's leaders vowed to speak out for the interests of organized labor.

"You don't start the season believing you're going to have a losing season. You start the season thinking that you're going to be the champions," Frank Snyder, the group's secretary-treasurer, said at a Capitol news conference attended by about two dozen labor leaders and pro-labor legislators,

The federation declared its opposition to privatizing liquor and wine sales now controlled by the state and establishing a voucher system that would provide taxpayer subsidies for poor children in failing schools to transfer to different public, private or religious schools.

Corbett, who last month became the state's first Republican governor in eight years as the GOP completed its takeover of the legislative branch, advocated both concepts during his campaign but has not endorsed any specific legislation.
