Hacked and Now Vandalized, HBGary Pulls out of RSA
By Robert McMillan, IDG News

The California security company that is at the center of a controversy over a plan to discredit WikiLeaks and its supporters abruptly pulled itself out of the RSA security conference in San Francisco this week, citing security concerns.

The company's subsidiary, HBGary Federal, also cancelled a talk it had planned to give on the Internet activist group, Anonymous. It was news of this talk that riled Anonymous and precipitated the controversy last week.

- snip -

The company decided to strike its booth from the RSA conference floor, however, after it was vandalized on Sunday, said Jim Butterworth, HBGary's vice president of services. "We... came back the next morning and it was very apparent that the group responsible for the activities in the news had decided to make another statement," he said.

The IDG News Service obtained a photo of HBGary's vandalized booth. Someone had placed a large paper poster on the HBGary booth that read, "Anon... in it 4 the lulz.." Lulz is Internet slang meaning 'laughs.'

85. Anything to fan the emotions of thin skinned onlookers
If Clarence Thomas can put a pubic hair on the can of soda his secretary was about to drink from, and then get seated at the Supreme Court, yet a hand written sign that could be thrown away before opening time is tantamount to vandalism!

Oh the horror! An Economically important, job creating and federally sanctioned Corporation was somehow harmed. Oh the humanity.

Talk about taking the ball and going home. Just like any Corporation, they take the stance of "We have nothing to talk about" and walk away, because they know that they couldn't say anything without damaging themselves.

Better to get a crack squad of attornies to craft a bulletproof public announcement than to risk a spontaneous comment.

19. what an odd way to drum up business right?
the ceo took on anon in order to show how great he was. The hope was to drum up business by exposing anon.

The whole anon attack was successful because the ceo chose a lame password and the company didn't really take its own security seriously.

So if this company goes down, the employees will have to find jobs at more stable and secure "security" firms.

Or perhaps Obama will give them a hubris bailout.

21. Yes, they deservedly got hacked.
We need a peaceful revolution, not to overthrow our government but to drastically overhaul it. These "security companies" with their plans to "smear" citizens demanding honesty should be illegal.
If our tax rate for the wealthy were what it was 40 years ago, most of these problems would not exist. Return the government to the people. Corporations are not people. Reinstate the laws against "casino capitalism, The Fairness Doctrine and put a cap on CEO and bankster "earnings", especially while wages for 95% of Americans are falling. Protect our Unions. Remove all money (except Public) from politics.

We need to have a peaceful revolution and demand this and so much more. TRANSPARENCY.

Fair trade not free trade can bring back a lot of manufacturing jobs.
The GREEN REVOLUTION can bring America to almost full employment. Instead,"we" keep encouraging the existing energy companies with subsidies while they steal the largest profits (each quarter for a decade) ever.
If I were able, I would gladly "hack for freedom."

"Collateral damage?" Whatever. People who work for the scum of the earth go down with them. Shall we mourn for lost jobs when a pimp is busted? When Xe has no more military contracts? When a dictator's regime topples? (Won't SOMEBODY think of the death squads?!?!?) Also, many of those "poor employees" - most in some cases - know exactly what kind of people they work for... No pity for those folks.

It's AWESOME.

in a capitalistic system. Exceptions to the rule, of course, are if the corporation is too big or has political connections or both. When those exceptions apply any corporation will gladly dump capitalism in the trash in exchange for government protection.

68. A criminal enterprise was happily exposed, and you are parading your ignorance.
Your vague and general post evinces zero knowledge about this case.

HBGary and apparently its partners were openly threatening others, as a result of which their files were exposed. This in turn showed that they were at the least repeatedly soliciting conspiracy to commit dreadful crimes against journalists and legal protesters.

Fuck them.

The Sopranos are also "employers." Every fascist or gangster outfit is also an "employer."

We must be sure not to expose them for what they are, lest they lose their jobs! We should never try to expose evil organizations, I mean, not ALL their employees are evil. Some merely turn a blind eye to the evil.

That means that Xe offloads the onerous burden of paying income taxes to the "Contractor", who as you know, must fastidiously report every quarter to Uncle Sam don't you know...

If they were actually employees, Xe would be bankrupt.

63. Great interview - I just listened to the whole thing.
It's pretty depressing though to realize just how biased and selective the Justice Department is as to which crimes it prosecutes and which ones it turns a blind eye to or actively obstructs. The rot goes very deep into the system, and when it infects the Justice Department itself the whole concept justice in America becomes a sick joke.

I understand the impulse of journalists to report the most head-turning information available on a story, but using provocative words that CLEARLY do not apply is absolute crap.

50. This just shows that HBGary was no security company at all
They were merely a propaganda company, fronting as a security company. They clearly do not have any real experts on staff, or else they would have easily been able to stave off any cracking done to their website. Furthermore, had they any real security, their e-mail would have been secure, and not open for some cracker to break into the system and grab it.
Kudos to the Anonymous who accomplished this task of revealing these fakers for what they are.

84. I think you're on to something here...
The whole last 30 years have been one giant dog and pony show. From Reagan's "trickle down" to Bush's lies for the Iraq invasion, we've been subjected to a huge propaganda play. Consider the attack on the government (Reagan's "famous" nine words) to Walker's attack on unions to the constantly whining about the federal deficit (oh? Where was the "concern" when Bush invaded Iraq and put the resultant expenses on the US credit card?) to bogus front groups with temporary websites to stop single-payer, public financed health care to TARP and "Citizens United" etc.etc.etc...

Wonder what happened to the billions unaccounted for after the Iraq invasion? (Why does Mubarak have $70 billion?)

Wonder why we have breast and genitalia groping by TSA? (makes irradiation scanners so much more palatable--assuring $100 hundreds of millions in contracts for Rapiscan).

We've been had...simple enough. And the lies keep coming. There is a small but extremely wealthy faction in this country...if not the world...who simply want...more, and...more.

And they're willing to put on this kabuki play to get it.

The Iraq War crystallized it...get the US involved in another war and sit back and collect the profits. After all, there's no profit in peace.

Why is there is an ongoing assault on government, unions, health and education? Consider who stands in the way of the oligarchs and plutocrats: Government, unions, and healthy, educated Americans...

97. Spot on!
Less the 400 people worldwide own and control better than 45% of the planet's resources, including HUMAN resources. These uber wealthy people have their own PRIVATE systems of transportation, education, and leisure activities. They are certain their vast wealth will protect them from the catastrophic economic disintegration we're witnessing.

I think they're seriously underestimating the ingenuity and creativity of the hoi polloi...

not offering any of your own. Since you've "researched" them, I look forward to seeing your backup, although I'm not holding my breath. (Why do I feel this is a waste of time?)

Here's some snippets that contribute to my opinion/belief about Anonymous:

Actions credited to "Anonymous" are undertaken by unidentified individuals who apply the Anonymous label to themselves as attribution.

Anonymous has no leader or controlling party, and relies on the collective power of its individual participants acting in such a way that the net effect benefits the group.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group)

I don't have "proof" but it sure sounds as though you do, so let's have it. You may change my mind.

and haven't had a chance to respond. I haven't read your link yet, but I certainly will, and as I do with any link, will analyze it for its merit regardless of origin. As a quick response, two articles I'll direct you to are by the Financial Times. I actually downloaded both of them to my work computer on Thursday in anticipation of your response, but will not have access to them until Monday. In the mean time, if you want to register at FT and then do a search for "Anonymous", you'll find a number of very good articles describing their investigative findings - including the two I mentioned. However, if you want to wait until Monday, I will gladly copy the relevant parts of them for you here.

HBGary was trying to sell a list of who they thought were high level leaders of the group to the FBI. The group retaliated. That means there is no longer any list (if there ever was one). So how do you figure the FBI or CIA is gonna go knocking at anon's door?

Rule number one. when committing a crime or plotting against another. Tell no one before you do it.
Rule number two. Keep your mouth shut after committing a crime (most criminals are caught because they can't keep their mouths shut and incriminate themselves)
Rule number three. Don't fuck with anonymous.
