Madison Schools Close Due To Teacher 'Sick-Out' After Walker Budget Hearing
Edited on Wed Feb-16-11 07:12 AM by PeaceNikki

MADISON - One of the biggest school districts in Wisconsin have closed their doors Wednesday due to the amount of teachers who have called out sick.

Public employees are upset of Governor Scott Walker's budget proposal to end collective bargaining, taking away state worker unions' power to negotiate vacation, sick pay and benefits.

The superintendent says there's just not enough substitute teachers to fill in for nearly half of Madison's teachers that called out sick.

He vows to investigate.

24. Important to Note
He excluded the cops from this round of cuts--needs their help.

Will our cops and soldiers be American enough to not attack our citizens who are resisting this nefarious potentate?

25. Yea, Interesting
Even more interesting would be to see how many in the public sector, now under attack, voted for Reagan, Bush, Bush, and other congressional republicans.

Do those who've been convinced to pull for the republican team EVER look at the effects of republican policies on themselves? Seems like there is a pretty big disconnect, or obfuscation of a lot of low-income, low-information voters. Democrats at all levels should do a better job of pointing out who is attacking whom.

42. Most Democrats are not good at messaging. A few (like Grayson) are
terrific, but most haven't got a clue. Meanwhile, as bad as theya re at governing, Republcians are great at messaging.

On top of the Dems' failure to properly frame their message, they must also contend with the corporate MSM's deliberate burying of their message. That's a real obstacle, of course, but because we know the MSM is going to do that, it is even more important to frame the message effctively. Since the Dems won't get many good chances to get it widely disseminated, they must not waste those chances when they do get them!

7. My daughter teaches in a wealthy suburban Green Bay Schooll
and she has had to put up with several mouthy right wing teachers for many months. Suddenly they have become very quiet and a few have even expressed regret for having voted for the Walker. They have been bitching about 'Obamacare' for months, but now that they might have to pony up considerably more for their own healthcare, they've gone silent.

i guess they think it is a way to give other people ideas. They don't want to see mass protest breakout in other major cities. Another manipulation of the masses. Just keep on posting links of the stories to your facebook acct to let others know what is happening.

10. Milwaukee teachers "warned"
Milwaukee Public Schools on Tuesday sent a district-wide email that ordered teachers and other employees not to skip school to attend rallies protesting Governor Walker's controversial budget bill.

"For the remainder of this week, monitor and record requests for absence, date and time received, notice of request and reason," the email read. "Any staff member who is absent without prior approval is to be coded AWOL (Code 91). Principals are not to approve absence for personal reasons (code 23 or code 69) during the next three days."

that would result in some teachers losing their jobs. Yes, this was during the time Paul Ryan attended, but I don't remember if he was a part of the rally, though. :D (I doubt it)

21. Holy crap! Better get those schools back up and running!!
From the OP
"One of the biggest school districts in Wisconsin have closed their doors"
Has they?
"...due to the amount of teachers who have called out sick"
I wonder, was the 'amount' of teachers more or less than a gallon?
I've NEVER 'called out sick' personally because there wasn't anyone there to hear me. I was alone in my room, not feeling like going to work.
"Public employees are upset of Governor Scott Walker's budget proposal..."
Of what reason?

Ah, jeez. Enough.

31. I think Walker could not lose on this one
Madison is different but...if nothing was done then he wins, gets what he wants. If there are wildcat/illegal strikes then he gets to point at the union and say that they refuse to share in the sacrifice and want to hurt your kids. It is the Christie playbook.

43. Back in the early '80s I remember a teachers' non-strike in VA.
My fair Commonwealth being a "right to get screwed state" and already having a fine suite of laws to restrict collective bargaining, the teachers decided to simply follow the rules and come in and leave at the designated times, and no longer work at home.

Chaos ensued, because teachers' jobs are very, very difficult and time consuming.
