Gov. Rick Scott to African-American legislators: “You guys”
Source: The State Column

Florida governor Rick Scott spent Monday at a luncheon with African-American lawmakers, speaking to the group about the upcoming legislative session.

In doing so, Mr. Scott seems have set off a debate over race and politics.

“I grew up probably in the same situation as you guys,” Mr. Scott said to the group of 20 Democrats. “I started school in public housing. My dad had a sixth-grade education.”

A number of state Democrats objected to the assumption. State Rep. Betty Reed said she was offended by the remark, adding “He assumed that everyone <[n the room> was poor and that can only be because you’re black

33. And, Scott will wonder what the fuss is about
"At least I didn't say 'you boys' or call them 'my niggers'," he's probably thinking.

8. He's a mean-spirited prick.
Who else cozies up with teabaggers and gives their budget address in a church? He completely shuts out the media and journalists who only want details on how he plans to completely dismantle this state. He has always been a cold bastard--the republicans in the legislature even hate him, they are only using him because of his money.

15. I'm not excusing him by any means. But there is a difference between poor
judgement and being a mean bigot. Now, he may still be one, but that comment didn't reflect that.

16. It was very poor judgment caused by patronizing arrogance and stereotyping.
Doesn't prove he is a bigot, does prove he thinks in racial stereotypes, though.

Who is to say that many of the men in the room didn't grow up in the suburbs and had dads who had bachelor's degrees or graduate degrees?

He was "talking down" to them to pretend he could identify with them. Well why doesn't he ASK them about their experience and views rather than assuming he knew? Now there is a concept.

And where I'm at (Texas), you see a whole lot of this kind of thing. My personal belief is that one of the offended should explain it to Mr. Scott.

I'm wondering if he's looking around surprised like "huh? What did I do? I was trying to reach out."

Edit:
That is if no one did explain it. And of course a Govenor should know better.

but Scott really does give a flying fuck what other people think about him.

I'm a Floridian, that's been his MO throughout his entire campaign.

22. Yes. And if I were there, I'd explain to him that we don't own any stores in my family.
(Cause we don't). And I'd take the time to explain to him all the many ways Koreans come to this country.

It might be a wasted breath. But, if we're going to work together, he'd have to at least understand who we are.

23. What you're not getting...
is that our dumbass governor doesn't listen to people, period. He has an agenda and meeting with "those people" is just window-dressing.

I do know some things about him that aren't on the internet and aren't being reported about him (people who have actually worked with him on particular things). This governor has made lying into an art form.

Keep this up and you'll vie for top prize against Commander Codpiece for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, every goddamn time.

in mixed groups or only women is amazingly unquestioned by almost everyone.

Maybe his carelessness came from this uncriticized insensitivity.

30. I learned my lesson
when I coached my daughter's 7-10 year old girls fast-pitch softball team.

After about the 20th time I said; "c'mon guys", one little girl came up to me with a look that could kill and said; "we are NOT GUYS"!!

I had no idea, but she apparently was hurt and insulted, so I quit saying "c'mon guys" and stuck with "let's go!"

25. What an ignoramus
Not only has he shown his true colors (no pun intended), he has made it even more clear that he is not fit for either politics or elected office. We are not talking about a private comment picked up by a microphone. This statement was made in an official capacity and he is too ignorant to realize that such a comment is utterly offensive.

Just an example of some of the sick comments from the article. I don't know why I am still amazed at the stupidity of racists.

"Ha ha another example of black idiocy:

We want to be classified as an underprivileged group but we don't want to be classified as an underprivileged group. Send 'em back to the jungle already so we can get on with our lives."
