TSA Workers Stole $40K From Checked Bags at JFK: Cops
Source: nbcNY

Port Authority police busted two Transportation Safety Administration employees for allegedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars from checked baggage at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Coumar Persad, 36, and Davon Webb, 30, are expected to each face three felony charges -- grand larceny, conspiracy and possession of stolen property -- and one misdemeanor charge of official misconduct, authorities said.

Police say $39,980 was recovered from the suspects' homes in connection with the investigation. The money was all reportedly stolen from one passenger's baggage.

1. Well, who's guarding the guards?
Just shut the whole facade down now! TSA isn't worth spit in stopping terrorists or average citizens taking guns on planes...

4. It may have been to avoid scrutiny for moving cash in amounts over over 5-10K.
I'm not sure it's illegal to, don't know much about that but I have read lots of cases where persons carrying amounts of cash in excess of $10,000 were sometimes questioned at length about it and sometimes the cash was siezed for no reason at all. This is in regards to regular police, not necessarily airline security.

6. You are correct.
If you are holding in excess of $10K in cash, you are going to experience serious delays.

The idiots could have purchased a few $9K Money Orders, folded them up between a few $20s and put them in their pocket.

22. Maybe the bag's owner didn't want to declare the cash in customs
assuming this was an international flight...fwiw I think that is illegal...

7. My thoughts too.
Who would put that kind of money into a suitcase and then check it?

20. Which is why the TSA employee took it.
They probably figured it was a drug dealer who would not report the loss.

14. You can still lock luggage.
There are TSA-approved locks that can be opened (and relocked) by TSA personnel.
You can also choose to use a different lock and accept the risk that the lock will be broken and your bag may be damaged.

12. If I'm making $10/hr and $40,000 just happens to fall in my lap...
I can't say I would do the right thing.

But by all means, stash your thousands of dollars in to your checked bagage, I'm sure these 2 guys were just bad apples and this would never happen again.

23. Actually, it was 170 grand
The TSA goons only took 40 of it, which makes me question their brains even more -- I think it would have been MUCH easier to "lose" the bag instead...

13. I think we have a problem with the US Post office too.
It might be as simple as students who work on college campus post offices. We don't mail anything to my daughter's campus address anymore.

I would suppose that some Chamber of Commerce contributions come in that way.
