In defeat for Boehner, House votes to eliminate funding for second F-35 jet engine
Source: Washington Post

The House on Wednesday narrowly approved an amendment that would eliminate funding for a second engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a move that would contribute an additional $450 million to the estimated $61 billion in federal spending cuts that House Republicans have proposed for the rest of the current fiscal year.

The amendment, offered by two-term Rep. Tom Rooney (R-Fla.), passed the House on a 233-to-198 vote. Its passage was a victory for conservative Republicans as well as Defense Secretary Robert Gates, both of whom had criticized the alternate-engine program as unnecessary and wasteful.

The vote also marked a defeat for House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who has generally supported the sweeping cuts proposed by members of his caucus but had opposed eliminating the second engine, which he has argued saves the government money in the long-haul. The engine program supports about 1,000 jobs at the GE Aviation plant in Evendale, Ohio, near Boehner's home district.

The engine amendment is one of more than 500 that have been offered to House Republicans' government spending resolution.

One of the first bills was repeal of health Care and it passed the House only to die in the Senate.

Why not put them to work making... oh... wind turbines? Solar panels? Something for the new high speed trains being refused by Governors everywhere? Surely there's something useful they can do. Plenty needs doing.

33. This is not a blame issue - defense acquisitions aren't there to
provide jobs but to acquire goods and procure services really needed by our armed forces. The military shouldn't be seen as a social program.

21. House votes to kill pricey jet engine
Edited on Wed Feb-16-11 06:26 PM by SpartanDem
Source: Detroit News

President Barack Obama won a showdown vote Wednesday in the GOP-controlled House to kill a costly alternative engine for the Pentagon's next-generation fighter jet. The win by Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates is a switch from where the House stood last year under Democratic control. It reflects a sustained administration push to win over the votes of scores of Republican freshmen elected last fall on campaign promises to cut the budget.

Many taxpayer watchdog groups also weighed in against the engine program, slated to cost $3 billion over the next few years and $450 million this year alone

The 233-192 tally was a loss for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, whose state reaped thousands of jobs from the engine, built by the General Electric Co. and Rolls-Royce

The Democratic-controlled Senate supports the second engine. That, combined with Boehner's backing, could yet keep the program alive.

It's damn shame that every time Obama wants to kill some program he has to pull teeth in order to do it.

26. I'm intrigued
Obviously, this was a combination of Democratic Representatives, and enough Rethugs to make a pretty lopsided vote. Was this the first collaboration between our side, and the tea partiers?

Politics makes strange bedfellows.
