WSJBRUSSELS—Belgium's finance minister on Wednesday submitted a new proposal to form a government to King Albert II, a day before the country tied Iraq for the record of the longest period without elected leadership.
The king extended Finance Minister Didier Reynders' deadline for breaking the political and institutional gridlock. "King Albert II has extended his
mission to allow him to complete a detailed report," said a statement released by the royal palace. "A definitive version will be presented March 1."
Members of the caretaker government that has run the country since elections last June sought to defuse market worries that have pushed up the interest rate on issuing national debt. For years, it has been "possible for investors to make profits in our country," despite decades of continual political crisis, said Mr. Reynders in an interview.
Analysts praised Mr. Reynders' approach as clever political chess as he prepared to hand over his proposal on Wednesday afternoon.
