Rahm Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff, has been elected mayor of Chicago, easily overwhelming five rivals to take the helm of the third-largest US city.

Emanuel was declared winner on Tuesday night after capturing the majority needed to avoid a runoff.

The former Obama aide, who would be the Windy City's first Jewish mayor, held 55 per cent of the vote with 86 per cent of results from district neighbourhoods counted, the Chicago elections board reported.

"We're cautiously elated," Robert Cole, Emanuel campaign co-chair, told NBC Chicago.

Anything less than an outright Emanuel win on the 1st ballot would be spun as a "repudiation" of Obama or a sign that "Oooh!! Seee! Even his base in Chicago is turning against him. The wheels are coming off the bus!!"

So Obama was spared of that nonsense narrative. But don't expect him to get any credit either.

Might have swayed some middle voters to vote against the Republicans.

there are precious few republicans here, thank god.

i have no problem with mayor rahm. it takes a really big, really tough person to run this city and rahm ran against a field of midgets.
i think he will do a great job.
