Gruesome footage "proves" Libya using heavy arms

Britain's Times newspaper said Wednesday it had footage of severely wounded and dead protesters in a Libyan hospital which proved that heavy weapons were being used to crush the uprising, as the Libyan interior minister and some army units announced their siding with the Libyan revolt.

Shocking footage of corpses with bodies blasted off and patients with almost completely severed torsos provided "incontrovertible evidence" that heavy artillery was used, Martin Fletcher, the newspaper's associate editor said.

"It's not entirely clear how these men were killed, it could have been by fighter jets, it could have been by helicopter gunships, it could have been by mortar, it could have been by heavy machine guns," Fletcher said.

"One thing is abundantly clear, they were not killed by tear gas or by batons or by methods of suppressing peaceful protests that are generally considered the outer limits of what is acceptable," he added.

Reports seem to point to widespread massacres. Shooting to kill, not to disperse, and killing on a wide scale, not just protesters.

True "artillery" and most aircraft-dropped munitions are so overpowered that they could level large chunks of cityscape. Most likely it's mortars, grenade launchers, and possibly small rockets from helicopters.

"strafing runs" using small caliber automatic weapons that can fire thousands of rounds a minute on protesters in the streets...And YES that can rip bodies apart easily. Mortars leave craters & can topple small buildings as well. My guess is they are using small caliber automatic fire from aircraft & helicopters that can fire thousands of rounds a minute & like you said not bombs.

And like you said RPGs & maybe rockets from helicopters but those too can do severe damage to a city's infrastructure.

and possibly also M53/59 Praga vehicles that carry twin 30mm.

The Mirage F1s that defected to Malta each carried two unexpended pods of SNEB 68mm rockets.
I've seen photos of civilians holding up 14.5 and 12.7 casings.
There's lots of heavy weaponry being used to shred human flesh in Tripoli.

And I made the mistake of opening some of the photos that were linked on Twitter. I will never get those images out of my mind.
May Qaddafi burn in hell, but only after he has been drawn and quartered in a public square.
