LePage dismisses BPA dangers; ‘worst case is some women may have little beards’
Source: BDN

AUGUSTA, Maine — The political debate over bisphenol A is heating up in Maine after Gov. Paul LePage’s recent comments questioning whether the controversial chemical is as dangerous as many scientists claim.

And LePage’s unusual quip about some women growing “little beards” from exposure to BPA likely will add another wrinkle to an issue on track to be one of the most contentious of the legislative session.

In his comments last week, LePage said he has yet to see enough science to support a ban on BPA, a common additive to plastics that some research suggests may interfere with hormone levels and could cause long-term problems. LePage said until scientists can prove BPA is harmful, the state should not rush to restrict its use.

“Quite frankly, the science that I’m looking at says there is no ,” LePage said. “There hasn’t been any science that identifies that there is a problem.”

4. So...Snowe, Collins and LePage, eh? Ever think of moving to Massachusetts?
We need help getting rid of the Brown turd in 2012.

I'll keep a light on for ya.

3. Here's the quote, it's a must read

LePage then added: “The only thing that I’ve heard is if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen. So the worst case is some women may have little beards.”

SO... what his educational background? I mean, he feels qualified to interpret scientific studies, so obviously he must have a degree in medicine, or at the very least biology or chemistry, right?

11. Maybe the good people of Maine should start sending Gov. LePage some bras.
For that little "no problem" he's going to have.

32. Precocious puberty in girls is what you get with environmental...
...exposure to estrogens. If we're lucky that's all BPAs do to mammals like us. However, since BPA are mimics and not actual estrogens, a more likely outcome is to knock various parts of the maturation process out of kilter with each other with all sorts of unpredictable results.

33. Circus freak. You must be young not to be aware of such shows.
Bearded ladies, tallest and shortest man in the world, the four breasted woman, elephant men, Siamese twins... Most travelling shows had their own, and if they didn't have a "set" they'd fake it.

I saw one once about 30 years ago now. The live show was a thing of the past by then, but the tent was full of dubious medical specimens like two headed fetuses and 3 headed snakes and grainy blown up photos of "freaks" taken around the turn of the 20th Century.

35. That photo looks like it dates to to perhaps the turn of the last century or thereabouts.
No, I'm not that old but as an antique dealer I have some knowledge of circus side shows and the like.

What I was wondering was if anything is known about the gent in the photo, i.e. name, state or country, any info about how he came to his occupation, etc.

Sorry I wasn't more clear in my original post.

17. Pot is bad for you. All the science says so.
But there is no science on it because the FDA refuses to let us study it!.
That's because all the science says it is bad. Quite frankly, the science I'm looking at says there should be no medical marijuana. There hasn't been any science that identifies any safe uses.

He has yet to see enough science to support the ban. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist -- only that LePage hasn't looked at it.
