Sen. Ensign says state should not ban prostitution
Source: Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Senator John Ensign says Nevada should not ban prostitution and local governments should decide the fate of the world's oldest profession.

KTNV-TV reports the Republican called prostitution a "county by county issue" when asked about a proposed ban on the industry after a town hall meeting in Henderson on Wednesday.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the Nevada Legislature on Tuesday that Nevada should end legalized prostitution because it soils the state's reputation and deters business investors from moving here. Nevada is the only state in the nation where prostitution remains legal in some counties.

The comments were met with lukewarm reaction in Carson City, where lawmakers will likely not address the topic this legislative session.

4. Harry Reid's Mormon puritanism is showing again
I suppose Harry Reid never considered how many out of state wealthy businessmen and pro-athletes come to Nevada to rendezvous with the working girls in the brothels, and spend money at the hotels, casinos and restaurants.

I saw an interview with one working girl on TV a few years back. She said her student loan debt was wiped out within two months after she started working.

12. South Florida Former Gambling Havens Could Afford To Enforce Monogamy, but
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 06:19 PM by Vogon_Glory
Some of the places in South Florida where mobsters ran illicit gambling houses and brothels in the 1930's and 1940's could afford to close down vice dens without damaging their economies, but I doubt that very many little podunks in the middle of Nevada's great nowheres can afford the hits to their economy criminalizing prostitution in their counties would cause.

Having visited such places like Mineral Wells, Texas, Galveston, Texas, Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Havana, Cuba after the great moral clean-ups make me wonder if the price of sexual purity might be a bit higher than the blue-noses would have us believe.

11. This is such a nonissue...
The Nevada prostitution laws are written in such a way that consorting with legal prostitutes is more trouble than it's worth.

You can't legally buy sex anywhere in either Clark or Washoe County--where the state's two major tourist destinations, Las Vegas and Reno, are.
You can't legally buy it in an incorporated area, so you have to go out in the middle of the desert to trade with prostitutes.
You HAVE to go to a house of prostitution, and the women who work in the sex trade there are required to live there during their tours of duty.

Besides, one of the major attractions of prostitution is that it IS illegal--there is an excitement that comes with doing something you're not supposed to and getting away with it. Most johns DO get away with it; if there was any certainty of getting caught only the terminally stupid would hire a hooker.

Dear Senator Reid: Prostitution is not what's deterring business investors from moving there. The fact your state is in the middle of the fucking desert and the water situation is uncertain is deterring business investors from moving there.

20. However, Some Clients Visit Legal Brothels Because
However, some clients are willing to drive out to visit legal brothels not only because they don't want to be bothered by the vice squad, but because they don't want to be worry about being robbed or beaten up by predators working with a few prostitutes or by predators looking for targets of opportunity. It's costly, but less so than a trip to the emergency room or a hospital stay.

The issue here is really complex. Can't get into it now (actually I'm supervising a middle school kickball game), but check the Las Vegas Sun's website for a series of articles and opinions.
