Town Hall Attendee Asks GA Republican When Someone Is Going To Shoot Obama
Ryan J. Reilly | February 24, 2011, 10:50PM

An audience member at a town hall hosted by Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) on Tuesday asked the Tea Party congressman who was going to shoot President Barack Obama.

The unidentified town hall attendee's question got a big laugh from the audience, reports Blake Aued of the Athens Banner-Herald.

But Broun didn't exactly condemn the remark, according to the newspaper report.

"The thing is, I know there's a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year," Broun said in response to the question. "Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that's going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare."

7. This townhall took place in a mostly white, rural, poor and working class county in NE GA.
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 11:48 PM by CottonBear
I'm not surprised at all. I live nearby and I used to live in Oglethorpe County. There are some progressive folks there but it is a majority Republican, Gods and Guns stronghold.

A Democrat probably couldn't win there so the Athens folks threw their weight behind the local candidate.

I lived there for six years until 1995 and was born only about 40 miles away. While "progressive" probably isn't a word I'd use to describe anyplace in Georgia, no place comes closer than Athens. I mean, Gwen O'Looney, fer cryin' out loud!

Oglethorpe County is not Athens-Clarke County. He holds meetings everywhere but here in Athens-Clarke County because he is a coward. Oglethorpe Co. and Athens-CLarke County are two separate political entities.

Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 12:45 AM by defendandprotect
"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald when you really need him?"

That was while Clinton was president --

and how many attacks were there on him by GOP/NRA gun nuts shooting into WH from the street -- ?

And, a private plane which just happened to get thru the ban on air traffic over

the White House to crash -- almost -- into the president's bedroom!!

Finally, the GOP/Devil with a blue dress on rode to the rescue!!

PS: And, then, of course, there's the ACTUAL right wing political violence over decades now

which took not only our president, but our people's government!!

9. Very pleasant
Granted, you'd have no Social Security, no Civil Rights Act, or any other Democratic milestone of the 20th century. You would have the pleasure of asking various fascist dictators what they thought American foreign policy ought to be. Sounds like heaven.

If you don't understand my response, it's time to learn about Joe Robinson, Sam Rayburn, Lyndon Johnson, and a variety of other southerners who made sure more than a few landmark bills got passed. It wouldn't hurt to learn about the northeastern rush to follow Charles Lindbergh in his quest to suck up to a tyrant or two, while the south took a far more pragmatic view.

One jackass in Georgia shouldn't tar the south as redneck racists any more than those protests several months ago in NYC should tar the northeast as xenophobic racists.

13. Joe Robinson
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 11:41 PM by Art_from_Ark
was one of a very distinguished line of Democratic Senators from Arkansas. Robinson was instrumental in helping FDR to get New Deal legislation passed. Perhaps as a reward for his efforts, Robinson was honored on a commemorative half-dollar coin in 1936 while he was still living-- and thus became one of only 5 Americans to be honored on an American coin during their lifetimes.

31. Question to Broun: Who’s going to shoot President Obama?
http://athenscms.com/blogs/2487/

<snip>

Update: Broun’s press secretary, Jessica Morris, confirmed that the question was indeed, who is going to shoot Obama? “Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on,” she said.

Here was Broun’s response:

The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

He then segued into Republicans’ budget proposal.

44. Demographics
The tea party movement is largely comprised of "whites" (i.e. people of European descent) from rural areas who listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Glenn Beck. They love Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman. The good news is that they comprise a small, albeit very vocal, part of our society. What strategy should Progressives use to deal with the tea party?

52. "tea bagger" is so ingrained that it gets me in trouble
I was at a Christmas party, and made some comment like "why don't the tea baggers go after the bankers, they're the real problem," and an acquaintance turned bright red and said "do you know what that means? do you know how disrespectful that is?" Before I could answer, a friend who likes to cause trouble laughed and "Oh, she knows. That's why she said it." So the acquaintance is unlikely to ever speak to me again. No loss.

86. was just reading an article about Yitzhak Rabin's assassination - similar
The rabid RWnuts and religious fundamentalists in Israel were yelling that Rabin was a traitor and threatening assassination because he was negotiating for peace with the Palestinians. Meanhwile, Netanyahu (rightist leader, now prime minister) sat back and let these people go on with their hate speech, with nary a word. Then Rabin was assassinated. Rabin's wife and others never forgave Netanyahu for letting the RWnuts scream on and threaten Rabin, leading to a nutcase assassinating him.

I'm seeing parallels. I hope this ass gets a visit from the Sec. Service.

Did secret service go after him? Well, they should have.

72. his answer was pretty damn inadequate
Broun: "The thing is, I know there's a lot of frustration with this president. We're going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we'll elect somebody that's going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare."

the subject was white male. If he was Arab or Muslim he would be in custody.

65. Ever heard of Richard Humphreys?
Edited on Fri Feb-25-11 12:26 PM by jayfish
He served or is currently serving a 37 month sentence in federal prison for saying "God might speak to the world through a burning Bush,". This new idiot shouldn't be treated the same or worse. He wasn't using a metaphor.

71. I'd be willing to bet that these people are a lot less brave
when a couple of secret service agents come and knock on their door and would like to speak with them.

73. So it looks like the shooting incident in Tuscon has done little to change the tone in
political dialogue. That's really depressing.

82. What answer did this moron expect?
The idiot asked a question. One would assume he expected an answer. Did he think Broun had an answer? Name, date, time, etc. did he expect that Broun was privy to some inside super secret information as to who would shoot Obama? Did he expect Broun to tell him?

What a classy and completely stupid bunch these Obama haters are. Did he really think his congressman knew who was going to shoot Obama and would actually tell him during a town hall meeting?
