Forty hurt in Bulgaria gas attack
Forty hurt in Bulgaria gas attack

At least 40 people have been hurt, some seriously, in a poison gas attack in the Bulgarian capital.

A bomb containing a toxic chloride gas was thrown into a visitors' area in a Sofia traffic police office, the Interior Ministry said.

At least one person was said to be in a life-threatening condition and four others were critically ill.

Police said a suspect was held two hours after the attack, but there was no word on possible motive.

4. Dunno

Bulgaria is one of the coalition countries, but I have no idea if they have troops in the country.

6. Yes, they definitely have troops in Iraq.
I don't know how many, but they have had at least five fatalities, and have recently participated in combat in southern areas of Iraq, with some being wounded.

My guess is that there will be more fatalities and woundings as things continue to heat up in the south.

There was a terrorist gas attack inside a building, and nobody died (well, not yet...but that one person may get better).

Chemical weapons are 'area denial' weapons. If you can leave the area, you're probably going to be fine. They aren't half as deadly as the media has been trying to imply they are -- and 'homemade' ones are even less so.

So don't be so worried about them.

If you want to worry about a chemical attack, worry about your neighborhood Dow Chemical plant.

8. Wasn't Chlorine gas used in WWI??
It took massive amounts of it and the wind blew it away half the time. Bring it on!

10. Outdoors, it's not very useful
As an NBC specialist noted after 9/11 when these 'chemical weapons' scares started (that's Nuclear Biological Chemical, not the TV network), the main reason that soldiers do so much chem weapons training and have so much equipment for it, is that they would be expected to remain in place during a chemical attack.

If you simply leave the area, you stand a very good chance of coming away almost unharmed, especially outdoors.

9. Chemical weapons are much less dangerous than a bomb and harder to use.

11. agreed in principle
but "terror" is the operative word. These folks will be scarred by the experience - and the idea that it's not safe to go anywhere, do anything will permeate, the more these attacks occur.

12. Of course
Terror is what these types of attacks mostly create, not deaths.

If our own media had any sense, they'd educate people on the truth of what things like this can and can't do. But they won't, because they want to be able to continue to scare us with the threat of it.

So who are the real terrorists, then?
