Somali pirates seize Greek ship
Source: AFP

BRUSSELS — Somali pirates on Monday hijacked a Greek-owned ship carrying a crew including 19 Filipinos, three Romanians and a Russian in the Arabian Sea, the EU naval mission said.

The bulk cargo carrier Dover was on its way to Saleef, Yemen, from Port Quasim, Pakistan, when it was attacked by the pirates around 260 nautical miles northeast of Salalah at 0600 GMT, the EU Navfor mission said.

"Details of the attack are not known at this time," the anti-piracy armada said in a statement.

"There is presently no communication with the vessel and no information regarding the condition of the crew," it said.

1. I've seen Somali pirates interviewed and some feel there is no other option to
"make a living". They're desperate. This is what poverty engenders. nt

8. That's no excuse for piracy. I say put armed guards on commercial vessels,
and fire on anyone who attempts to hijack or board them.

3. I would send no sizable ship through those waters without an
on-board, armed helicopter. If that is against the law, then the law should be changed.

6. I don't think we need to go that far.

But the entire coastline needs to be cleaned up. Maybe put ships real close to shore and watch everything coming in and out. A blockade?

7. I don't understand why this keeps happening
If I owned a multi-million dollar ship with millions of dollars of cargo and crew, I'd arm the damn thing! A pair of .50 caliber machine guns fore and aft would do the trick.

Now I've heard that some ports of call won't let them in with arms.

So dump them overboard before you enter port, and have a helicopter deliver a new set when they leave port!

This would still have to be cheaper than losing ships and people.

9. I don't think ships with guns can dock in most ports.

There's some old maritime laws. I'm not so sure dumping weapons is the best thing, but your solution may be cheaper than the alternatives. I still think the world should go for a solution rather than just prevention.

10. Like I said, dump 'em overboard.

Yeah, well while the world is busy looking for a solution if I was a ship owner I'd be putting guns on my ships. If I couldn't dock a a necessary port because of it, I think it would be cheaper to dump them overboard and just re-supply the ship when it leaves port.
