Wisconsin's Walker to absent Democrats: 24 hours to return
Source: Rueters

(Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.

"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.

"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.

Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

4. Or, he could accept the Unions offer
on wages and pensions in the amounts he requested and drop his call for ending collective bargaining on work rules and problem solved. This would cost nothing and save the state many millions.

12. Here is what a DUer says:

"Now Scott has one day to withdraw his demand to crush the public sector unions before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," DUer's spokesman Eringer said in a statement.

15. Were it my state, I would say FU to Walker.
He is the reason that there is a finacial crisis to begin with!
He should be saddled with that $165 mil and ridden by Democrats until the cows come home.

17. I would love for some ...
government worker (preferably an HR person, close to retirement) enclose in every lay-off notice, a hand-written note, imploring each one of those being layed-off to contact gov. walker personally to express their thanks for "representing their interests by standing firm and not compromising with those unions."

Each one of those notices represents a future anti-walker/anti-republican voter, because if nothing else ... this BS is showing that many (way too many) people don't care that "they" are out to get "them" until it becomes clear that "them" is "them."

20. True, but this is actually about ideology.
Republican hate for the middle class, hate for anyone who works in the public sector, and hate for unions.

21. oh I understand that...
Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 08:44 PM by mike_c
...it's just that I'm hard pressed to understand why anyone takes a guy seriously who says he MUST destroy labor in his state to settle a deficit under $0.2 billion when states like California are struggling under deficits exceeding 100x that and trying to work WITH their public employee unions.

Yes, I do know that it's about ideology, not budgets. But the simple truth is at least pretty damned evident to anyone who is paying attention.

23. He is not.
Collective bargaining could be saving the state government 5 trillion a year, and he would still be pushing to destroy it. He would probably frame it differently, but the money involved has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
