Muslims, supporters protest Congressional hearing

NEW YORK | Sun Mar 6, 2011 6:53pm EST

Muslims, activists and supporters demonstrated in Times Square on Sunday to protest a Congressional hearing on radicalization of U.S. Muslims.

Holding placards that read "Today I am a Muslim, too," a few hundred gathered at the interfaith protest, decrying what they said was the bigotry and ignorance behind anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, until recently the leader of the controversial plan to build a mosque and cultural center near the former World Trade Center site, said he was concerned this week's scheduled hearing by Representative Peter King on radicalization of U.S. Muslims would only alienate them.

"My concern is the perception among the youth here that Muslims are under attack ... by their own government.

1. Question....
I know this is bit of a digression, but I've always wondered why there isn't more of a pushback from peaceful Muslims who are against the extremists. For instance, in the '60s, when violent whites attacked Blacks in the US, other Whites came to the forefront to denounce those actions.

It could be due in part to poor media reporting, but I've not seen a vocal Muslim come to the forefront to denounce the actions of other Muslims.

Obviously, it's not necessary being that we're all human, but because religion is such an integral part of some many lives in the US, I would think that some Muslim group would come forward.

8. Poor media reporting or a failure to see what's being reported?
I ask the question above because there have just been too many articles on moderate Muslims in many, many media outlets for any reasonably informed and fair-mined person to claim that there is no "pushback from peaceful Muslims who are against the extremists."

A better question to ponder is why so many Americans continue to make the unsubstantiated and easily debunked claim that moderate Muslims have not, and do not, condemn extremism?
