Ensign will not run for re-election
Source: CNN

(CNN) - Sen. John Ensign of Nevada will go before cameras in Las Vegas Monday afternoon, to announce that he will not run for re-election next year, two sources tell CNN.

The two term Republican will make a statement at noon local (3pm ET) at the Lloyd G. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas.

The one-time rising star in the Republican party admitted last June to an extramarital affair with Cindy Hampton, his onetime campaign treasurer. She is the wife of Doug Hampton, a former top aide to the senator.

Ensign's office announced last December that the senator had been told that he was no longer a target of a federal grand jury investigation into whether he violated the law in an effort to cover up the affair.

2. Good question...
I know that Kyl is not seeking re-election. Are there other GOP in same boat to offset the spate of Dem retirements?

I would not celebrate prematurely.

7. And Ensign very possibly would have been easier to beat.
Then again... there's always the change that Angle will get into the race.

Either way. This was already the best shot we had at picking up a Republican seat in 2012 (along with Brown in MA). Hardly the "wheels coming off" when there are 8-10 democrats in more danger than the next-most-endangered republican. We need to expand the field of competitive seats, not just take one of the few competitive ones and make it slightly more competitive (if that).

11. Read "narrative" as "wishful thinking" and it makes more sense.
We would all prefer to have the wheels fall off their bus sooner rather than later.

If only wishing made it so. :)
