SEATTLE -- U.S. Commerce Secretary and former Washington Gov. Gary Locke will be appointed the next ambassador to China by the Obama administration, ABC News has learned.

"The president asked him to take this job because Locke had the experience and relationships necessary to take on this key post," a senior administration official told ABC News. "As a Pacific Rim governor and commerce secretary, he helped lead a historic increase in trade with China."

3. They love him there
When he was governor he took a trip to China. Impressed that a Chinese person was governor in the US he was given a hero's welcome. Also - his wife comes from a respected family.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. As gov he was Boeing's man as well as Weyerhauser's.
Bet there will not be too much leveling of the playing field though.

5. Wouldn't going from being a Cabinet officer to an ambassador
usually be considered a step down? I guess that's not so if the department is Commerce, and the ambassadorship is to China.
