BBC plans to cut up to 25% of workforce by 2016

The BBC is planning to cut up to a quarter of its workforce by 2016 in order to make the necessary savings following the six-year licence fee freeze.

More than 1,000 job losses have already been announced – including 650 at the World Service and 360 from the BBC's online operation – and this figure is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

BBC executives are understood to be working with a 25% staff reduction figure as they draw up plans to meet director general Mark Thompson's target of a 20% cut to the corporation's costs in the coming years.

According to BBC internal figures, as of September 2010 about 21,927 full-time staff were employed by the corporation, including 1,865 at commercial arm BBC Worldwide.

1. Isn't Al Jazeera an outgrowth of a cut BBC operation?
maybe someone else will pick up the slack.

3. This is v. impt. The BBC is one of the last real news orgs. A few years ago,
its charter was amended in a number of ways. One was to change the system for appt of trustees to its board, so that the appointees are selected by the Prime Minister -- which of course creates a major conflict of interest for an organization that's supposed to report on the PM and his administration.

Another change was to authorize outsourcing stories and services to private corporations.

I tried to get DU'er's to pay attn, and was brushed off. I don't take it personally; but what does it take to get DU'er's, not to mention others, to recognize these take-overs of important public infrastructure, before it's too late and actively object?

E.g., how many here are supporting Al Franken's campaign to try to rescue net neutrality?

4. woah... I had no idea the BBC had changed so much
Appointments by the prime minister? Privatization? These are not good signs; and totally against what I thought the BBC was supposed to be about. Independent broadcasting and the public interest. What the hell happened? Is this the fault of New Labour?
