US To Support Libya No-Fly Zone At UN
Source: Sky News

Joey Jones, deputy political editor

- The British Government is "cautiously optimistic" of securing a UN resolution enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya after securing the support of the United States.

An amended resolution tabled in the Security Council was drafted with the assistance of the American administration.

It also reflects the concerns of Russia - another permanent member of the council that, until now, has been lukewarm at best about the value of a resolution.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Foreign Secretary William Hague said the co-sponsored draft resolution called for "all necessary measures short of an occupation force".

3. There isn't going to be a shooting war, this is too little too late. The rebels will be crushed,
and everything will go back to what it was before in Libya

5. Maybe not. UN Security council meeting today (or at least it's scheduled)
At UN, US Pushing for Broader Military Authorization Versus Gadhafi -- But Only With Arab Participation

During the eight-hours of the U.N. Security Council meeting today, the U.S. pushed for amendment after amendment that would broaden the military action authorized against Col. Moammar Gadhafi's forces well beyond just a "no-fly" zone, sources tell ABC News.

"The U.S. view is that we need to be prepared to contemplate steps that include, but perhaps go beyond, a no-fly zone at this point, as the situation on the ground has evolved and as a no-fly zone has inherent limitations in terms of protection of civilians at immediate risk," U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice told reporters Wednesday evening, saying consultations will continue Thursday, when she also hopes for a vote.

Since the U.S. is concerned that a no-fly zone would have limited impact because most of the attacks by Gadhafi's regime against the Libyan people are not by air, the U.S. also is pushing for the resolution to authorize international forces to stop attacks by Gadhafi's forces on its people conducted on land and by sea as well.

This could include, for example, allowing aircraft from the international coalition to bomb Libyan tanks.

12. Whoopee!
Now there will be far more destruction than Gadhafi and the rebels could ever have accomplished on their own, even in their wildest dreams!

They'll do what she says.

13. Can't please you.
You probably didn't like the Afghan war, so we gave you the Iraq war. Did that please you? No. Now you're already whining about the liberation of Libya, and we haven't even started yet. You are one tough customer. :)

14. anybody but the US
Why are we the world's policeman when we're bankrupt? How about the Saudis, who are rolling in money, hiring mercenaries? I'm sure that would help get Al Qaeda in there replacing Qaddafi, that's what the US wants, right?

16. Hillary on bombing Libya: gotta do it!
"A no-fly zone requires certain actions taken to protect the planes and the pilots, including bombing targets like the Libyan defense systems..."

"Gadhafi must go...(He is) a ruthless dictator that has no conscience and will destroy anyone or anything in his way. If Gadhafi does not go, he will just make trouble. That is just his nature. There are some creatures that are like that."
