Radiation from Fukushima plant detected in Sacramento, EPA says
Source: LA Times

A minuscule amount of radiation from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor in Japan was detected in Sacramento but at such a low level that it posed no threat to human health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday afternoon.

One station in Sacramento detected "minuscule quantities" of a radioactive isotope, xenon-133, that scientists said they believed came from the reactors at the stricken Fukushima plant.

But the level detected would result in a "dose rate approximately one-millionth of the dose rate that a person normally receives from rocks, bricks, the sun and other natural sources," according to an EPA statement.

Experts have anticipated small amounts of radioactive isotopes from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi power plant to blow over to California as soon as Friday but said they expected that the radiation to be well within safe limits.

2. If it's "one millionth the dose of bricks, rocks, sun, etc." how can they detect the increase?
How do they know it's from Fukushima and not someone building a brick house in the area?

(Being slightly silly, but...)

6. They are detecting specific isotopes of radioactive elements
That could only have come from the nuclear accident.

3. From the EPA statement. Note the highlighted.
Today, one of these monitoring stations in Sacramento, California that feeds into the IMS detected miniscule quantities of the radioactive isotope xenon-133. The origin was determined to be consistent with a release from the Fukushima reactors in Northern Japan. The levels detected were approximately 0.1 disintegrations per second per cubic meter of air (0.1 Bq/m3), which results in a dose rate approximately one-millionth of the dose rate that a person normally receives from rocks, bricks, the sun and other natural background sources. This validates a similar reading of 0.1 Bq/m3, taken from March 16 through 17 in Washington State.

Xenon-133 is a radioactive noble gas produced during nuclear fission that poses no concern at the detected level.

These types of readings remain consistent with our expectations since the onset of this tragedy, and are to be expected in the coming days.

Following the explosion of the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine in 1986 – the worst nuclear accident in world history – air monitoring in the United States also picked up trace amounts of radioactive particles, less than one thousandth of the estimated annual dose from natural sources for a typical person.

I'm not panicking... not yet, at least.

P.S. You wouldn't happen to have any potassium iodide tablets you could spare, would you?

5. Brown got on TV yesterday saying they
were carefully monitoring levels throughout the state and if there was a problem, Californians would be notified immediately. Since it's Brown, I'll believe him. He may be a Dem. Party Boy but in this, I think he'll be ethical.
