Suspected cop killer takes 8 hostages in Georgia

Atlanta (CNN) -- The suspect in the slaying of a police officer barricaded himself in an Athens, Georgia, apartment Friday and has taken eight people hostage, said Vernon Keenan, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Keenan said the GBI is in contact with the suspect, who authorities have identified as Jamie Donnell Hood.

Hood is wanted in connection to Tuesday's slaying of Senior Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian, 34, and the wounding of Senior Police Officer Tony Howard, 43.

2. Update:two adults and two children released, 4 adults still hostage

ATHENS, Ga. -- 11Alive News has learned that suspected cop killer Jamie Hood is negotiating with law enforcement officials, while holding four people hostage at a home north of Athens.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan held a news conference Friday evening and said that this was a very tense situation, but they were working to secure the safe release of the hostages and safe surrender of Hood.
