40. Gerry was head and shoulders above those dolts...
A remarkably intelligent individual with more compassion in her pinky than all four of those clowns together. Ferraro had character, those four are merely characters.

She was the first female VP candidate ,NOT "the person whose name should not be said in the same sentence as Ms Ferraro'"

She paved the way for women of substance.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/26/us-usa-ferraro-idUSTRE72P1IL20110326

(Reuters) - Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic congresswoman who became the first woman on a major party presidential ticket as Walter Mondale's running mate in 1984, died on Saturday at the age of 75, her family said.

Ferraro died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston of a blood cancer after a 12-year illness, according to a statement from her family.

60. She was not the first woman on a presidential ticket! Actually there were many earlier ones:
See Wikipedia entry here for the VERY long list of women candidates who won their party nominations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_United_States_presidential_and_vice-presidential_candidates

The first to win a party nomination was Victoria Woodhull way back in 1872, though her name did not appear on the ballot.
The first to appear on a ballot was Belva Lockwood in 1884.

Geraldine Ferraro was the first major party candidate on a presidential ticket, running as vice president for the Democrats.

Her accomplishment was great, but let's not forget the many women candidates who blazed that trail for her in times when doing so was even more difficult!

27. Seems a minor point when so few realize the women who have
run for President...including a favorite of mine, Shirley Chisholm.

For one of the two major parties to nominate a woman in either position was a major hallmark. I don't think it is "piss-off" worthy myself.

I used to love hearing her debate right wingers on news talk shows. Ferraro took a back seat to no one with her knowledge and understanding of complex issues and used her unruffled and confident voice to slay political dragons twice her stature.

I'm very sorry to see her go. She brought the American woman credibility and respect in the political arena through the last decades of the 20th century.

As Americans, we all lost something today.

She was one fine lady - principled and smart.

And what is more I never knew she was ill. I'd see her from time to time on TV commenting on the issues of day, but the one issue that was never raised was her cancer. Others would have waved it around like a bloody shirt (Edwards, anyone?). Just another example of the dignified way in which she live her life.

37. I was shocked to hear the news, I hadn't realized that she was so ill.
Gerry was a trailblazer. A woman who was only one of three in her law school class. A woman who was told that she was taking the place of a man and yet she persevered.

I'm saddened by her passing and by the nastiness directed at her in 2008. She fought for civil and women's rights for decades and deserved better. Thank you Gerry for all you did to promote women and thank you for all your hard work supporting Hillary's campaign.

You will be sorely missed. Maybe some day your dream of seeing a woman president will come true. Pity that it wasn't in your lifetime.

Rest in peace.

42. I saw Grifty McQuitter had to pipe up right away
I see that Grifty McQuitter had to make a statement about Ferraro;

Sarah Palin took to Twitter and Facebook Saturday to mourn the passing of Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman on a national ticket who "broke one huge barrier and then went on to break many more."

"My family and I would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Geraldine Ferraro," Palin, the second-ever woman on a national ticket, wrote on her Facebook page, about a half-hour after she tweeted about the "sad" passing of Walter Mondale's running mate.

I suppose that because she has the same type of reproductive equipment as Ferraro had that she thinks she is somehow equal to Ferraro.

wow, i had higher expectations of that website. and yeah i agree palin can't be equated to ferraro i mean think about Palin's soft spot for creationism for instance. While yes it will be groundbreaking for a woman to be in the White House, we've got to also consider merit too.

"When I had the honor of working alongside Geraldine on election night last year, we both discussed the role of women in politics and our excited expectation that someday that final glass ceiling would be shattered by the election of a woman president. She was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to public service as a teacher, prosecutor, congresswoman, and vice presidential candidate. She broke one huge barrier and then went on to break many more. The world will miss her. May she rest in peace and may her example of hard work and dedication to America continue to inspire all women."

On the bright side, she's had many good years since her diagnosis, thanks in part to advances in treating blood cancers and, in part, to her ability to go anywhere she believed would give her the best care, like Mass General in Boston and MD Andersen in Houston.

She had a semi-distant relative of mine who was involved with a blood cancer drug that was then experimental, testify before Spector's committee. Only person I know personally who testified before Congress.

Anyway, Ferraro was on the video his mom showed me of his testimony, smiling.

47. Walter Mondale has a new memoir out "The Good Fight: A Life in Liberal Politics"
be sure to check that out. And it was quite shocking to hear about her death; I'm listening to All Things Considered on NPR today and wondered why its lead story would be about Ferraro. Then came the hourly bulletin...Ferraro died. Damn. That's just a few days after another distinguished American woman, actress Elizabeth Taylor, died.

I looked her up on Wikipedia and learned that Ferraro also represented the 9th New York district (Brooklyn and Queens) in the House of Reps from 1979-1984. During Clinton's first term she was the ambassador for the UN commission for human rights.
