Pfizer unit recalls two possibly mislabeled drugs
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's Greenstone LLC unit said on Saturday that it was voluntarily recalling two drugs in the United States because they may have been labeled incorrectly by a third-party manufacturer.

Some bottles of Citalopram, a depression drug, may have been labeled inaccurately as Finasteride, used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, and vice versa, the company said in a release on Saturday.

Greenstone warned that women who are pregnant should not handle or ingest Finasteride due to risks of side effects that can cause fetal abnormalities.

The company advised patients to return any suspect bottles to their pharmacist.

1. And my shrink and pharmacist;
Both lecture me on the evils of getting some of my meds from Canada. Ha!

2. Meds in Canada
are probably produced by the exact same manufacturer as the ones you find here.

Finasteride but that I am at risk of taking Citalopram. I just started a course of Finasteride (Proscar) in preparation for a prostatectomy.

On rereading I see that the drugs may be swapped. Oh Bad!

4. This might explain recent claims of non-effective depression meds.

5. Anyone know what a "third party manufacturer" is?
Sounds really dangerous.

How many third party manufacturers are making Oxycontin, for one example?

Are contracted drug manufacturers regulated at all?

6. Heavily regulated.

It's a facility that has the materials, quality control, and IP agreements in place to make a drug for another company. It's pretty common.
