Sharon to Get U.S. Nod to Keep W.Bank Land - Report
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/news/news-mideast-sharon-usa.html

By REUTERS
Published: April 10, 2004

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will receive, in exchange for a planned Gaza pullout, a written U.S. assurance Israel will not have to quit all of the West Bank in any future peace deal, an Israeli newspaper said on Sunday.

The Haaretz daily said the pledge would be contained in a letter that President Bush will hand Sharon at their White House meeting on Wednesday.

Political analysts say the more benefits the United States offers Sharon in the meetings in Washington, the easier it will be for him to obtain backing at home for his declared plan to withdraw from Gaza and four of some 120 West Bank settlements.

1. SHIT. FUCK. THIS BASTARD
Not that I couldn't hate Bush any less, but at least I was more neutral on Israel-Palestine on him b/c at least he seemed disengaged and not ready to hand over Palestinian land to the Israelis.

But this PISSES ME OFF. NO! The Palestinians are now down to 22% of historical Palestine! What the fuck?! Why should they lose even more!

:grr: This is why we need Kerry in there.

6. Historical Palestine?
And those well-known and well-defined borders were established in what year? By which ruling power? And maintained how long?

Because I know you're not referring to that area encompassed by the united kingdoms of Judah and Israel, so could you be a bit more specific?

11. Judah and israel...LOL
So people with actual memories of living in Palestine, with actual deeds to land and photos of their families living there, are no match for a 2000-year-old claim?

21. I'm refering to historical Palestine as in British Palestine
The Levant was historically said to be what is now Israel, the Occupied Territories, and Lebanon. The area that is now Israel and the OT was also often seen as being part of greater Syria, along with Jordan (a wholly colonial creation) and Lebanon.

When I refer to historical Palestine, I refer to the land that is currently Israel PLUS the OT, which together formed British Palestine. Of that territory, the Palestinians can only receive 22% -the West Bank and the Gaza. I don't argue with this - this is more than fair towards the Israelis who get 78% of the land. BUt for the Israelis to go in and demand EVEN MORE LAND is infuriating. The Palestinians number as many if not more than the Israelis and they need land. For all the talk about Israel being a "small" country, consider the future Palestine, which will have to host 6 mil. people in one of the smallest countries in the world!

Israel has all the land it needs. If it needs to redraw boundaries to take into account, for practical reasons, demographic facts on the ground, fine. However, the boundaries should stay close to the '67 ceasefire line and any land the Israelis annex in the WB should be compensated by an equal amount of land adjacent to the WB that are currently part of Israel.

3. Anything short of a treaty can easily be reversed by subsequent admins
Bush certainly has done it with his drunken use of executive power.

4. what a mess...
what in the world were the Israelis thinking putting Sharon in office. It's made their situation infinitely more difficult. How the fates conspired to have Sharon and Bush in office at the same time is God's own mystery. Let's hope He has an exit strategy ready to go, because we sure need one and we need it soon.

7. What possible difference does it make?

Haven't you noticed? The Muslims are beating our asses. After this, what we say gets giggles and guffaws, not obedience and respect. Bush has made our word worthless and our power has been revealed as a mirage.

Israel would be better getting such a guarantee from Iran and Jordan. And considering how much love other Arabs have for the Palestinians, I wonder if it's really off the table.

16. Sharon has messed things up fairly severely, too.
That war criminal really needs to be taken down by the Israeli people. They deserve a leader who is actually committed to peace, not a butcher who wants to steal and steal and steal Palestinian lands and doesn't care who dies to accomplish his goals.

How is this any less bigoted than someone saying "The Jews are beating our asses"?

8. This will be quite unpopular in Iraq
The people there might think Americans, or at least those in the current administration, don't really care for Arabs.

12. It won't please Osama either. Has Bush forgotten him?
Foreign policy can't be tailored to suit Al-Q'eda, but such a blatant
disregard for Palestinian feelings and rights won't be ignored by
militant Muslims.

9. This is the equivalent of the Versailles Treaty
planting the seeds for the next war.

The West Bank, the Golan, and East Jerusalem are not for Sharon to keep, and not for us to guarantee that he keeps them.

13. U.S. assurances for Israel are the reason that we are
international pariahs, jimmy Carter is right in stating that our one sided support for Israel is the reason our people are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, war criminals like Bush and Sharon need to be impeached and tried as criminals in the Netherlands.

No, seriously? I mean, we all know the behind-the-scenes work of BushCo and AIPAC. But, like, how can he sign some sort of legal assurance w/r/t the Palestinian territories?

19. ...and we wonder why folks in the world hate us -
"The United States' two-billion-dollar-a-year aid to Egypt will be on the agenda, as well as Washington's promise for an additional 300 million dollars to make up for money lost because of the war in Iraq.

The United States gave Israel -- which receives three billion dollars in US aid -- one billion dollars last year after the war in Iraq. Two-thirds of the annual US aid is for the military."
