Time: What Should Bush* Do? (We have no more troops to send to Iraq)
Edited on Sun Apr-11-04 11:38 AM by kskiska
(Barry McCaffery): There are no more U.S. troops to send to Iraq. That's why we need 80,000 or more troops added to the U.S. Army. Congress is allowing Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to dig in his heels and try to maintain a foreign policy based on a grossly undermanned U.S. military.

1. Bush destroys the military
...uses their strength built up in the Clinton years to do the hard work (ill-advised or not) and then has the effect of destroying them.

10. Wrong.
First, beg for forgiveness from the American people. Second, return the money that he and his friends stole from the American people, and finally, resign in disgrace.

4. Did anyone see McCain on MTP
He was SOOO somber. He kept talking about how the American people needed to know the kind of sacrifices that are needed . . .

There was definitely a draft in the room . . . .

7. Yeah but he discounted idea of a draft...

...I really want to like McCain, but I can't quite get there. He comes close to being non-partisan, then starts supporting Bush's stupid policies.

12. He's playing a role, just like Colin Powell. He is a neocon
through and through. He fully and without hesitation supports Bush and this invasion we launched against a disarmed country. He is actively working against our country and its Constitution. Don't try to "like" him because he is as much a traitor as Bush is.

15. There is absolutely NO WAY Americans will put up with a draft.
Perhaps McCains brain did get washed in the POW camp; does he realise that a draft will go down like a barrel of rotten fish? Bring it on! Guarantee a Kerry victory too.

34. The Draft...
The Draft will come after a * victory in November. Expect it sometime in March 2005.

Pray we get them out of office.

26. only the poor will sacrifice
Any chance McCain will ask the rich to sacrifice their tax cut to pay for the goddam war? I didn't think so - but he will ask the poor to sacrifice their children.

5. Oh, we've got plenty of troops...
with all the summer soldiers and sunshine patriots mouthing off about how we need to send more men and women over there.

Time for Tucker, Hume, Hannity, Coulter, and all those bright, young, and fit FOX News teammates to lock and load. Strap on those packs, soldiers. Everyone fights, nobody quits. And maybe that will teach you not to write checks with your mouths that your bodies can't cash.

30. Paraphrasing that quote that I love:
"And maybe that will teach you not to write checks with your mouths that your bodies can't cash."

Excellent! We need to start an email campaign for these Young Republicans (invite Army Recruiters to their meetings) and talking bungholes to chastise them into service. Then we'll see how happy they are to support these ridiculous policies.

6. Gee, why don't they contract out?
Seeing how these clowns are obsessed with contracting out all government services, why don't they just hire more thugs from Chile, South Africa and Israel?

All they got to do is pay them and when they get killed or wounded, they won't have to worry about the VA picking up the tab

(SARCASM MODE NOW OFF)

28. there are already well-paid mercenaries in Iraq
We already have private security detail in Iraq making upwards of $20,000 a month, meanwhile our soldiers families are on food stamps here at home. CNN actually did a story on this yesterday.

Send recruiters into the congregations of the Christian right and ask them to put their young in the military since they know this president and this war is so honest.

18. The draft is coming....
count on it if these neocons are in charge. Then you'll see the American sheeple wake up. When they have to actually put their money where their mouths are. I really don't understand how we could not have enough troops because I distinctly remember that after 9/11 we heard all sorts of media propaganda about how the young people were going in droves to the recruiting places to sign up. I knew then that it wasn't true.

24. There will be no draft
As long as we can use deficit spending to hire high priced mercenaries from all corners of the globe. Who needs a standing Army when you can outsource it all and help your rich corporate friends get richer.

25. there are two ways to become "rich" . . .
you can either bring in more money to meet your needs and wants . . . or you can reduce your needs and wants . . . similarly, there are two ways to meet military manpower requirements . . . you can recruit or draft enough new servicemen and women to meet U.S. commitments around the world . . . or you can reduce those commitments . . . I vote for the latter, and I'd start with Iraq . . .

27. Many reserves been on active duty for over 2 years
My husband's best friend just got back from Iraq. He's in the reserves - spent one year in Afghanistan was then sent straight to Iraq. He'll probably be sent back to Iraq this year. We have two other friends in the reserves that are both on their 2nd tour in Iraq. The fact that reservists are serving multiple tours over there says how desperate the situation is.

35. Gen. McCaffery has always been one of the cooler heads on this issue.
For a right-winger, he's always been level-headed, realistic, and at times doubtful, about this war. He was always respectful with Wes Clark (they were colleagues), and watching the two of them discuss the over-burdened military was both fascinating and scary...
