Sen. Clinton Says Supreme Court Still Merits Mistrust
Recent Decisions on Gays, Affirmative Action Does Not Outweigh 'Dubious Rulings,' She Says

Sen. Hillary Clinton said Friday that Supreme Court victories this year for gay couples, minorities and women do not erase the distrust created by other "legally dubious" rulings, including the Bush v. Gore presidential election case.

The court ruled this summer that colleges may continue to use race as a factor in picking students, that gay men and women cannot be prosecuted for having sex and that state government workers are protected under a federal law intended to ease work and family conflicts.

The rulings angered conservatives and were opposed by some of the court's most conservative members.

"These favorable decisions in recent months should not obscure the torrent of aggressively activist and legally dubious decisions of times past," Clinton, D-N.Y., told the American Constitution Society.

She said this is "the same court that gave us Bush v. Gore, which made a mockery of one of our most cherished constitutional rights, the right to vote," a reference to the 2000 ruling that ended Democrat Al Gore's chances of winning the White House.

2. Bravo.
I'd love to see her as President just to bring the Right wing to a state of apoplexy.

4. I won't trust the USSC ever - at least in my lifetime.
The Felonious Five should be in jail.

I was naive and believed in Justice blindfolded - BULLSHIT!

Sorry, everytime I think about what they did I can't help feeling as though I were raped.

5. Hmmm......Somehow this should have been said a year ago!!!
A little late Hilary. But I give you more credit than all the other
45 Democratic Senators.

Courage to stand tall when bullied by the WH has run on empty
for a while in Washington DC!!!

Glad she's finally stepping forward!!!

6. This is a horrible article
That speech was BRILLIANT!!! I wish I had the memory I did when I was 25, but I'll try to go the highlights!

The point of this speech was two-fold. One was to correct the judge blocking nonsense and the other to relay a sense of urgency about this Administration. 4 of 149 judges have been confirmed. Some of these judges have not been approved by State Senators which has always been a criteria for them even getting to the floor in the past. They've been written up by their own judicial colleagues as being radical. Priscilla Owen was actually written negatively by Alberto Gonzales!!! She talked alot about the agenda of the Federal Society. And then went into a long section about the Bush Radical Conservative Agenda. She differentiated this kind of conservative from traditional conservatives. She said that Pryor actually stated he supported the Bush Agenda; meaning the radical rightwing policies. She scolded the Republicans over the Catholics Need Not Apply Ad. Not ranting and raving, but in a very different kind of hushed, intense voice.

Then she went into the Supremes and mentioned that there had been good rulings, but that people should not be lulled into a sense of security with this court. She mentioned Bush/Gore, but it wasn't like it was the focus of her speech. The focus was the agenda of this Administration. She said Democrats thought Bush was certainly looking to overturn everything the Clinton Administration had done. It took the Democrats a while to realize they wanted to overturn years of court decisions and policy. How far back do they want to go? Before the Civil Rights Act, before Brown v. Education, she ticked off several rulings. Before labor laws when children had to work. All the way back to FDR or maybe even to Teddy. Back to the age of robber barons?

She commented on the time it took for the Democrats to realize what was happening and said that it was time for everyone to understand how serious the situation is. She asked this courtroom of lawyers to be active about discussing this with their colleagues, clients and friends.

There was more, but I think this is the gist. If you have a chance to see a repeat on C-Span, by all means do. It was super. With articles like this one though, the most important parts of her speech aren't even reported. The Democrats are fighting and trying, they just aren't getting much cooperation in the press.
