Glenn Beck To 'Transition Off' Fox News Program
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 11:48 AM by jefferson_dem
Source: Huffington Post

Fox News and Glenn Beck announced thast Beck will "transition off of his daily program" later this year.

From the news release:

Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck's production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News' digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.

The Decline of Glenn Beck
What caused it?
James Downie
March 3, 2011 | 10:59 pm

Six months ago, Glenn Beck held his “Restoring Honor” rally on the National Mall, drawing a crowd of about 100,000. Newspapers and magazines featured the rally on front pages around the country. The next month, The New York Times Magazine devoted a cover story to him. “In record time,” the piece observed, “Beck has traveled the loop of curiosity to ratings bonanza to self-parody to sage.”

Just six months later, however, Beck seems to have traveled somewhere else entirely. His ratings and reputation are in steep decline: His show has lost more than one million viewers over the course of the past year, falling from an average of 2.9 million in January 2010 to 1.8 million in January 2011. He now ranks fifth among Fox’s six weekday talk hosts, trailing lesser-known personalities like Shepard Smith and Bret Baier. Beck’s three-hour radio show has been dropped in several major cities, including New York and Philadelphia, and has seen a ratings decline in most other markets. “It’s hard to gain a million viewers,” says Eric Boehlert, who follows Beck’s shows for the liberal media watchdog group Media Matters, “but it’s really hard to lose a million viewers.” And Beck’s fall contrasts with the fortunes of other Fox News hosts, like Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, whose TV ratings stayed solid throughout 2010.

Beck’s commercial viability also seems to have suffered. His viewership among 25- to 54-year-olds, a prized advertising demographic, declined by almost one-half in 2010. An advertising boycott organized by liberal groups has caused over 300 companies—including Procter & Gamble, UPS, Coca-Cola, and Wal-Mart—to stop showing commercials during Beck’s show. The Beck brand isn’t what it used to be off the airwaves either: His most recent non-fiction book, Broke: The Plan to Restore Our Trust, Truth and Treasure, was his first book in eight years not to reach number one on The New York Times best-seller list.

He doesn't want to be solely blamed for shutting the government, thus causing the military not to receive their checks. Thanks a lot, Turd Baggers. lol

Owned by News Corp... which loses money quarterly. Murdoch has to prop it up.

And the show being on in automotive repair shop waiting rooms and Motel 6 lobbies may bring ratings up, but that ain't watching.

(not DUers) The marketplace has spoken. This type of idiocy doesn't sell anymore. Consumers of Beck's brand of propaganda and misinformation are dying off and changing the channel. Welcome to the world of "shellacking" as you would say.

26. Does this mean the age of media call-outs is ending?
Let me say right off that I have a team in this, Team Keith, Jon, Rachel, Thom and others, whom I enjoy (though frankly I'm worn out and don't pay them the attention I once did). But there's a part of the RW/LW media enterprise that does seem like a sport, and they play one another for our reactions and sponsorship.

But has it now jumped the shark? I have never been able to watch Beck for more than a minute or two because he brings out the psycho killer in me and I can't tolerate feeling that much venom toward anyone, but now are we swinging back toward serious politics and perhaps action rather than the screaming and posturing and finger pointing? I think we'd be a better country for it.

And yeah, I know it's possible that he's of to assume some other position, but he's so bizarre I can't see it. He's made his crazy bed and I hope he has to lie in it.

27. His rally drew 87,000 according to scientific estimates.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restoring_Honor_rally

They used a margin of error of + or - 9,000 people. The Daily Show drew attention to the fact that most of those people were in lawn chairs with coolers taking up space.
The MSM tried to push the storyline that the crowd was in the hundreds of thousands. A more accurate estimate is roughly 50,000 obese, fat, racist, dumbed down rednecks

42. Nah, I suspect it's the Repubs behind it, expunging the Tea Bagger icons from Fox.
The baggers were useful in the last election cycle. Unfortunately for the Repubs, though, it all got out of hand, now that some bagger candidates made it to Congress, and started spoiling the party with their tantrums and antics.

Since Fox is the official mouthpiece of the GOP, it makes sense that now they want to tack back away from the crazies.

Just my 2 cents. And hey, where exactly has Sara been lately?? They shutting her down too, maybe?

71. I think he will run
the field is wide open

Trump? -- please

Romany? -- a Mormon on the ticket of the party of the South--- no
Pawlenty? - wasn't he in "The Kids in the Hall"?

Sarah? - that is just funny

Barbour? - He has the money backing him but the visual (perception) of him vs. Obama will be devastating

Paul Ryan - probably the front runner at this point

Beck knows how to create the perception. He is batshit crazy but a POTUS run is money money money in the bank.

59. A guy I know that works for him told me to "check here"...

He says that Beck is off to do "bigger and better things"...

60. He's served his purpose and now they're moving on to the next demagogue.
He's been paid mere millions while earning his benefactors billions by aiding Republican victories in Congress (spineless Democratic appeasement did the rest, but that was probably factored into the equation to begin with). Now his show is an advertising liability, so he's being put out to stud.

78. Sorry to have borne the bad tidings to ya, but....
Don't you just know that he's going to be replaced by a dozen bad clone-Becks on Fox and every lame-ass AM talk radio station?

Fox could always hire Alex Jones and George Noory, and cut out the middleman.

But :applause: and thanks to Colorofchange.org for their long-running campaign to remove him off the air.

68. I don't believe it
He's up to something. No actual date when he's off my tv and what he's up to. Never trust someone like Beck! I just get the feeling he's up to something and he's just trying to get us off his case and to pat ourselves on the back while he does something even worse then that stupid show of his.

on edit: Is there anyone who draws 1.8 million viewers for a 5 pm spot?
He may have lost a million viewers, but he still has 1.8 million

80. just learned about this from ABC World News
of course i know that Beck is too hot even for freaking FOX NEWS.

The other sudden cable news departure of the year following Keith Olbermann. However, beck has the higher privilege because:
- Beck never got suspended by Fox News anytime, while MSNBC did suspend Olbermann for making unauthorized political donations
- Beck has a radio show that can be heard in many places across America, Olbermann only has his FOK News Channel blog (K not X, lurking freepers)
