Who is paying Tiger's Bill?
(04-12) 13:48 PDT FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP)

Fresh from the green jackets of Augusta National, Tiger Woods arrived at the home of the Green Berets on Monday for a week of military training.

Woods, who finished 22nd at the Masters on Sunday, came on a private jet for his visit with the Army Special Forces. But Woods probably won't get the same type of training as his father, an ex-Green Beret who trained here during the Vietnam War.

"I don't know how rough they're going to train him," retired Army Sgt. Maj. Dwight Nixon said Monday as he made the turn at the base's Stryker Golf Course. "They probably won't train him quite as hard, but they'll give him something."

<snip>

How much is Tiger Woods costing the US Government this week with his specially designed "Green Beret" training?

Shouldn't the professionals at Ft. Bragg be worried about something important, like stopping the killing in Iraq, instead of entertaining a celebrity at Camp McCall?

Ah, the American aristocracy and RHIP...

1. It seems like an advertisement for the armed forces.
I've seen all too many of them during sporting events this weekend.

3. Nice article.
(snip)
David Pugh, who tries to play a daily round at Stryker, was pleased that Woods was in town.

"He's giving something back to the community," said Pugh, a retired public school teacher and coach. "I wish more golfers would give more back."

Woods closes his weeklong visit to Bragg with a visit to Stryker. He will do an hour of personal coaching for eight youngsters from the post, chosen from about 200 who competed for a spot. Another 76 children will attend a clinic with four local golf pros and Woods.

The youth clinic will be followed by a skills exhibition for about 4,300 soldiers, students and invited guests, some of whom won tickets in a lottery.
(snip)
I'm certain not a lot of people got to the foaming at the mouth stage when Bob Hope and other celebrities got treated differently from the soldiers they were visiting.

4. Bob Hope
Was a shill for the war machine and even he didn't come here to Ft. Bragg and demand a week of "playing Army".

It's cool that Wood's Daddy was in the Army and all, but there are thousands of people in this community who don't get special treatment and whose father's did a whole lot more than just graduate from Special Forces School in the 60's.

Every officer at Ft. Bragg above the rank of Major will be out at the golf course on Friday and when it's over, a bunch of privates will get their weekend leave canceled to pick up the trash on post.

We have celebrities in here all the time and that's OK, but this week of "training" bullshit is over the top. The other nauseating thing is how secret the Army attempted to keep this until the local paper finally got someone to talk.

5. Thank you! My thoughts exactly, but
the first post nails it. This is an army recruiting windfall. Should provide some great new clips for the army infomericals that come on every night...

8. Not anything new
to recruit high-profile celebrities to make military service look "glamorous" Here's something on Clark Gable and James Stewart from WWII (probably our last just war).

Didn't Elvis enlist as well?

10. Gable and Stewart actually served
Tiger is just going on a short trip to Fantasy Island. At least it's raining here. Let's see how he like that part of the Army. Green Berets don't go to the clubhouse....

13. Tiger needs to classify his total junk Nike golf equipment at WMD's
..they have totally destroyed his game. Where is the true fighting spirit to say "shuck this inferior shit" and play good equipment--oh, it's called all the money he's making from endorsing them!! I've been to tournaments where it's advertised that Tiger will give a clinic for children for his charity but Tiger doesn't appear..just his papa Earl. This is staged crap and Tiger will not so much as break a manicured nail in his training. Another sell out to the Republican machine. Perhaps Tiger might ask if he would even be allowed to play on the PGA if it wasn't for Democrats.

Let's see. If an Afro-American with no demonstrable affinity towards his heritage is called an Oreo then it's fair to call Woods Tofu Tiger.

15. Tiger, like every American is free to do as he chooses
As long as he is breaking no laws I see nothing wrong with his appearance at Ft. Bragg. Didn't his Dad do two tours of 'Nam? What's wrong with Tiger wanting to give back to the community?

28. Tiger in the Bush: because he cares.
What's wrong with Tiger wanting to give back to the community?

All things being equal, a celebrity dilettante running around in combat class is a pretty dubious case of "giving back to the community."

But in a time of illegal war, when the nation is occupying Iraq against the will of its own people, Woods is acting downright shameful. His little stunt puts a smiling face on slaughter. That makes him a willing fool in my book.

16. If Woods goes to Iraq and it the guys there enjoy meeting with him,
so what? Big deal. It isn't costing $87 billion to train Tiger and its good for morale. Remember that we support the troops but not the war.

Maybe there is something to the grandoise vision of Tiger's father that his son will rise to be bigger than life in golf and beyond even to the point of taking the world by storm.

26. A bit more from a small March 16th article
<<snip>>

"It's an honor to walk in my father's footsteps by training with the service men and women at Fort Bragg," Woods said. "I have enormous respect for our armed forces and am thrilled this experience will include a junior golf clinic for these soldiers and their families."

Woods and Mark O'Meara spent about two hours on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf two weeks ago when they played in the Dubai Desert Classic.
