Russians taken hostage in Baghdad
<snip>
Eleven Russian workers have been abducted in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Aljazeera's correspondent in Moscow has reported.

An official from the Russian energy service company, Interenergoservice, told Aljazeera on Monday that two Iraqi company guards may have been killed during the confrontation with the armed captors.

A Russian engineer in Iraq told Jazeera the 11 worked at power plants.

Putin's election is over. I suspect he'll pull some of the old KGB tactics out on this one.

6. Hostage crisis deepens in Iraq
By Andrew Marshall

Baghdad - Eleven Russian civilians are the latest foreigners reported to have been kidnapped in Iraq, but China's official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday seven Chinese had been freed.

The conflicting news on the fate of foreign hostages reflected the turmoil in Iraq, where United States forces have fought fierce battles with Sunni and Shi'a guerrillas in the bloodiest violence since the fall of Saddam Hussein a year ago.

The kidnappings of the past week have added a new dimension to the fighting in Iraq, snaring civilians from at least a dozen countries - some of which, like Russia and China, opposed the US-led war that ousted Saddam.
