Muskegon Chronicle Large private company may become factor in Muskegon County jail option

MUSKEGON — An international company that operates the world's largest private detention facility and more than 100 other facilities is in the conversation concerning the potential relocation of the Muskegon County Jail operations to a Muskegon prison.
A Michigan Department of Corrections official confirmed this week that representatives of a private company, GEO Group, joined state corrections and Muskegon County officials for the tour and discussion last week at the Muskegon Correctional Facility. County and state officials are exploring the possibility of using at least a portion of the soon-to-be-closed state prison to house county jail inmates.
Russ Marlan, state corrections spokesman, said the options being looked at could lead to the prison at 2400 S. Sheridan housing county jail inmates and state prisoners by having a yet-to-be-determined way to separate the two groups.
State and county officials will “work together” to determine if an arrangement can be established to maximize taxpayers' money, Marlan said.
