Nader Tells Youth to Brace for Draft
http://washingtontimes.com/national/20040412-114403-9384r.htm

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader this weekend warned his constituents that a military draft is pending, and asked younger voters to prepare.
The independent candidate noted that the federal government is filling seats on local draft boards as preparation for a reinstatement of the draft, which was eliminated in 1973.
"The Pentagon is quietly recruiting new members to fill local draft boards, as the machinery for drafting a new generation of young Americans is being quietly put into place," Mr. Nader said in a press release sent out to constituents and posted on his Web site during the weekend.
"Young Americans need to know that a train is coming, and it could run over their generation in the same way that the Vietnam War devastated the lives of those who came of age in the sixties."

10. Especially when enacting the draft is exactly the plan...........
Wouldn't want to break a campaign promise too early in his term.

12. What president would ever rule out bringing back the draft if truly needed?
Personally I would not vote for a candidate running for president who did so.

15. Wouldn't you like to hear what he plans to do with Iraq.
You posted in another thread either bail or enact the draft are the two choices. I for one would like to hear what he has to say on this issue. It would certainly confirm my suspicions.

17. That is where we differ. I want to hear what Chimp boy is going to do
I will worry about what Kerry is going to do when he becomes president. And I trust he will make the right choices when that time comes.

24. so, hypothetically
five months down the road, the respective situations in both Iraq and Afghanistan have continued to heat up, tensions are aboil in other areas as well, and terrorists have struck repeatedly at our allies and at our interests in other countries. At this point in time, both Bush and Kerry have reiterated the need to "stay the course" and have both promised to "keep America strong in the face of terrorism." While niether has come out overtly in favor of a draft, both agree that it is an option to be considered. Do you vote for the D or the R?

Personally, I don't think it makes much difference which one wins on this particular issue. Whether Bush or Kerry, a draft is coming, though it may not manifest itself under that particular name.

16. I am glad somebody with a national stage finally said this
Look at the statistics - by far the worst voter turnout is among the 18-24 year old demographic. Having your ass on the line is a great cure for apathy.

18. Here's a sort of sneaky draft already proposed..
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/164693_draft13.html

WASHINGTON -- The government is taking the first steps toward a targeted military draft of Americans with special skills in computers and foreign languages.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is adamant that he will not ask Congress to authorize a draft, and officials at the Selective Service System, the independent federal agency that would organize any conscription, stress that the possibility of a so-called "special skills draft" is remote.

Nonetheless, the agency has begun the process of creating the procedures and policies to conduct such a targeted draft in case military officials ask Congress to authorize it and the lawmakers agree to such a request.

20. Those that I would like Drafted
On principle I completely oppose the draft. However, I think certain people should have to serve in a war when there is one. The president's children, those of senators, and those and the children of those people who support the war.

21. if there has to be a draft
then I trust Kerry to be responsible for the Armed Forces rather than the *. Plus I think that the rest of the world will be more willing to work with a Kerry administration. * has burnt his bridges. What scares me is the asshole sending troops to a new front just before the elction or right after the election, maybe shortly before he leaves office which will put Kerry in a no win situation. He is vindictive and evil enough to do just that.
