Breaking - Osama bin Laden is dead
Edited on Sun May-01-11 10:44 PM by Akoto
Source: MSNBC / White House

MSNBC reports that President Barack Obama will announce the death of Osama bin Laden, as the result of a US operation in Pakistan. Reports further state that OBL's body is in custody and will be used to confirm his death.

UPDATE: Temporary link added.

SPEECH UPDATE: President Obama has reported in his speech that the United States has conducted an operation which killed Osama bin Laden. Last August, he was briefed on a possible lead indicating that Obama bin Laden was hiding in a compound deep within Pakistan. The President decided last week that there was enough intelligence to move, and at his direction, a small team of Americans moved today to attack the site. Osama bin Laden was killed in the ensuing firefight, during which no Americans were harmed, and his body was taken into custody.

President Obama states that cooperation with Pakistan helped to confirm OBL's location. He also wishes to emphasize that the US is not at war with Islam, and that this should be a historic moment for all who desire peace.

394. The making of a Martyr. They knew that. What better way?
to ensure that "the terrorists" have a renewed reason to "attack" us. It's not enough to kill women and children, daily, to guarantee high "recruitment" numbers for "the terrorists" than to martyr their "leader"...aka..an old Arab man hiding in a cave with a dialysis machine.

Was our only "proof" that Osama directed the twin towers destruction, his taking credit for it? Amazingly (not), the first order of business was to increase our "threat level."

Once a government has taken it's citizens civil liberties, it will not give them back without a struggle.

I hope I am wrong on all accounts, time will tell.

Maybe if we leave (this is our opportunity it would seem) the M.E., we can mitigate the effects of our mass killings there by claiming we were just after Osama and we apologize for all of the collateral damage and all of brutalization of its innocent citzenry......Maybe...

Of course, now that we are "committed" to "helping those M.E. folks, we can not just leave them (alive) and let them fare for themselves since they have been doing that for thousands of years. Even if the world is not really THAT old.

I realize that I sound like an unpatriotic American, I am not. However, I question the "wisdom" of remaining in what were once sovereign nations, killing their citizens and imprisoning their people. Because
1) It is immoral and plain wrong.
2) We just keep creating more "terrorists" by staying.
4)WE CAN NOT AFFORD IT. Not because of our increasing deficit, although that has some bearing on this fact. Mainly, because by giving all of our money to the MIC and private contractors, we are neglecting OUR citizens. They have become impoverished and struggle to survive. We have already provided Them with universal health care and outrageous infrastructure spending while neglecting our country, except the very wealthy, they happen to depend on these "wars" to create large profits for themselves.

Sorry for the bitter rant but I do not expect ANY positive changes. I hope that I am wrong.

p.s.- Here and in the Presidents address, we were told that the "body was confiscated." For proof, show and positive identification I supposed.
Todays headlines read that "the body was buried at sea. Kind of an odd way to treat a "body" that you have spent trillion$ and countless lives and suffering to retrieve....

You'd rather we just not give an ounce of thought to the troops who have spent way too long out there in danger, the innocent Afghans and Iraqis, all of whom are in danger of losing their lives at any moment. You'd rather not think about all the innocent lives that have already been lost, and I'm talking hundreds of thousands, all because of making Bin Laden a false demon not worthy of all the attention the world gave him? He was turned into the entire reason we are in those countries, glorified as a mastermind when the War on Terror was unveiled. This War on Terror is the reason Al Qaeda has grown and is not an organization of the past. It is logical to think about bringing our troops home to safety and spending the money wasted on these senseless wars on programs at home that can help turn this country back around.

Oh, no, let's just celebrate. We won't bother to think about how our troops should never have been sent out to Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place and how that is a direct result of having built him up into this super-villain and how if that were never done our troops would never have been sent overseas. We'll just now accept that he is a super-villain and crack open a beer and cheer. Sheesh.

Some of us can see how interrelated all of it is and don't have to simplify everything down to one event at a time just to be able to digest it or have it fit into our own myopic views.

ETA: What exactly are you celebrating anyway?

Iraq only delayed this moment, distracted us for 6 years. After that bastard bankrolled the murder of 3000 people on America's soil Bush shoulda made it job #1, but of course Afghanistan didn't have oil.

I never agreed with either war (Iraq or Afganistan). However, it's impossible to make a rational case that either war either helped us find Bin Ladin or kept us from finding him.

Edit a rational case.

298. Well, let's be clear...
Obama redirected our efforts BACK to Afghanistan from Iraq, where Bush has misdirected them. This result comes from the unparalleled sacrifice of the troops and their families, but also reflects well on Obama's prioritizing focus on those who attacked us on 9/11. Obama commanded in just over 2 years what Bush and Cheney failed to accomplish in over 7, and starting from a deficit position.

I am not a fan of Obama's, at present, but this reflects VERY well on his leadership.

AFAIK, Pakistan & Afghanistan are different countries.

edit: Oh, & BTW, if you can accuse any country of 'attacking us on 9/11' it would be Saudi Arabia (and we've caught other, non-bin Laden Saudi terrorists with plans in the works/almost completed inside our country).

But they're still our bestest friend eva!

Since he promised he'd tell the military HOW to get Bin Laden IF we elected him and the quitter Gov to the executive branch, surely McCain didn't give our brass the info without some sort of booty in return!

There may be some recruiting on his martyrdom, but they don't make terrorists like they used to. Plus, unlike on 9/10/01, it's not so easy for an Islamic tourist to get off a plane and plan an elaborate plot.

Any idea how hard it must be for a Syrian to get a private pilot's license these days? LOL

WASHINGTON--Osama bin Laden has been killed, a United States official said Sunday night.

President Obama is expected to make an announcement on Sunday night, almost ten years after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

(THIS STORY WILL BE EXPANDED AFTER THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT)

Seems to me the exact opposite of a Friday afternoon news dump

...like it couldn't be released on a, oh, Wed. afternoon, let's say?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the evil bastard is finally dead,
but it took over 10,000 American lives, 100's of thousands of deaths of human beings in other countries (including many women, children & other innocents) and we're STILL smack in the center of 2 wars? Something which bin Laden wanted to happen?!

Plus bin Laden is now a true martyr to many.

162. And how many people has the U.S. killed in its supposed attempt to "get Bin Laden"
not to mention spending us into bankruptcy and using that as an excuse to destroy what little bit of a social safety net this country has and don't forget the way he was used as an excuse to curtail our rights.

Bin Laden may be dead but he is the one who came closer to his goal by getting the U.S. government to use him as the excuse to destroy the country.

I don't think his death was worth what it cost us.

344. trying to deny what you accurately state is a denial of reality.
For 10 years the bogie man Bin Laden has been used to decimate people's rights and been used as areason to kill hundreds of thousands of innocents.

I see no cause here for celebration and I'm cynical about anything the government claims.

The same song and dance was played when Saddam's sons were killed and then when Saddam dragged out of his fox-hole. It changed nothing..not a single bloody thing.

Musharif said 5 years ago Bin Laden was dead.

500. Well over twice the number which were killed on 9/11
Edited on Mon May-02-11 12:43 PM by Cherchez la Femme
9/11: over 2700

Iraq: over 4700

Afghanistan: over 2700
(Counting ALL 9/11 deaths as "American")

--these numbers are to the best of my memory (Full disclosure: my memory has not been truly good though, as of late: but I think these are darn close)

However, I took your complaining about breaking into a teevee show as sarcasm. Seems I was wrong.

The only problem I have with this 'Breaking News' is they used it as the antithesis of the Friday afternoon information dump;
it was sat on for days so it would be timed perfectly to be the water cooler nine-day-wonder topic of conversation

--like releasing the info on a Tuesday or Wednesday wouldn't still have the same effect...
but, as others have brought up, the timing was also the anniversary of Little Boots' "Mission Accomplished".

True, but IMO no less compelling if it WASN'T the anniversary of that political theatre: This manipulation was just more political theatre.

Fortunately, we have time shifting, so if we're lucky this won't go on all night. I suspect it will.

More seriously, it's really very unfortunate Obama chose the night before our election in Canada.

Stephen Harper will be making a speech shortly as the Prime Minister (i.e. not just as the candidate he has been for the last month), and things are running so close here that even the tiny fraction of the vote this could influence might have a real and awful effect.

Kerry, a war-hero, well you saw what they did to him all the while pimping a sniveling awol coke snorting rich brat.

They attacked Obama for being smart, educated, spiritual, and working in his community.

That doesn't mean that this time the smears will work, but you can bet they are already huddled furiously planning how to smear Obama over this. Its what they do.

(Edit: to be clear): as being gruesome.

not what was done to bin Laden's body.

Nor would it look good to tour his body so 'muricans could be filmed abusing a corpse -- no matter whose it was.

But this burial at sea was one bad idea...

119. I am actually Scared of this, depends on how popular bin Laden is in the Middle East.
Bin Laden's death could be used as a rallying cry by radicals that is what Mark Anthony did on the death of Julius Caesar. It has been done by others since that time, thus it is sometime NOT good policy to kill someone like bin Laden. Given the situation in the Middle East, could be grounds for popular revolts throughout from Pakistan to Egypt.

There is an old saying, be careful what you wish for, you may get it. In some ways that he is death is a problem the US and the West MUST address. Hopefully the US has a plan to make any use of his death by radical minimal, but we shall see.

Edited on Mon May-02-11 04:15 AM by Ghost Dog
mostly interested, I'd say, in economic equity. People are fed up with the concentration of the wealth (yes, as well as the power) of the Islamic World in so few hands, with all the distortions of social as well as economic priorities, the associated cronyism or unemployment, the police state apparatus and so on that entails, and want to see economic opportunities spread much more widely around.

Democracy? Sure. Democratic Socialism, even? Now you're talking. But everybody knows that what 'The West' calls democracy - the money-puppet media game of establishment party politics - would be little different compared to what goes down today in most of the Muslim world. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran even, (so, aren't we really talking about the Arab World?) have already taken this latter route, with (just as in the USA), for sure, Generals of powerful military forces never very far away from the seats of power.

228. I think thats a lesser angle
How popular he is seems like a lesser issue to me. The greater is how Obama will leverage this. Does he use it to carefully back out of these battles, to stop sending predator drones that blow up terrorist safe houses and family weddings with equal ease? Does he allow the hawks to continue fighting whatever battles they want, or does he reign them in and attempt to become a partner in advancing freedom? That is what will make OBL either a martyr to inspire or the forgotten terrorist who lost.

510. "Hawks" from the Pentagon
--at least a few, but they are very high in the echelon--
released a paper last week saying that the U.S. way overreacted and that the country should be concentrating and using its resources (and much less blood) not on War, Invading Countries & Nation Building, but on actual (as opposed to causing fear in what just may happen --BOO!-- ...no matter the small probability & relatively small death toll, along with massive blowback) problems impacting the physical welfare

i.e. Health & Welfare of its citizens; addressing wide-spread problems with bridges, roads, dams & other infrastructure, economics (JOBS!), Constitutional rights, etc.

of its citizens.

Well, that's what I got out of this paper anyhow... One of the few times I've felt very proud of my country in a while.

Apologies, the grammar and apparent logical processes may appear to suck in this post -- I'm just trying to put complex thoughts & feelings down before I've had time to completely grok it all...

310. First you have to recognize that 90% of Bin Laden was myth.
He was never a huge leader - more an organizing bureaucrat. He got a number of diverse, already existant terror groups talking to each other, coordinating their plans, but most are just local groups and have no interest in international terrorism. He provided seed money, and had a couple thousand people go through his training camps. His reputation came almost entirely from US propaganda.

Seriously, if they were really all that dangerous, and there were tens of thousands of them, then why so few attacks? NY, London, Madrid. A smattering of lesser ones. You'd expect a Madrid scale attack every other week. US-friendly heads of state assassinated. Attacks on the US. On US flagged ships overseas. General terror, like the Red Brigade attack on the Tel Aviv airport where all it would take is to have a couple guys with guns and grenades to kill dozens.

Bin Laden, whle definitely a bad guy who's well gone, is simply not that important. The only people he's popular with are those who have no need of an excuse to get crazy in the first place.

These threads all started years ago.

I would like to know, and I'm sure we'll hear all about it, if Obama specifically asked for different directions to be taken or made strategic moves that Bush didn't that led to this result.

If he can show, or at least indicate that, his re-election probability just went way way up.

I used to work a block from the White House.

Then again, being in NYC with a view of the financial district is kind of fitting. All year, it has made me really sad that I would have had a view of the Twin Towers if they hadn't been knocked down. On the anniversary they lit up where the towers used to be and since then every day looking out my window is a reminder. Obviously, Bin Laden being dead doesn't change what happened or bring anyone back but I'm still really glad he is dead. Maybe I am a hypocrite because I don't believe in the death penalty, but I feel like this is different, because it's an act of war.

The rethugs are gonna be damned confused about what to do for some time to come. His re-election is assured as long as he keeps his nose clean for the next year and a half, and the Dems have the upper hand politically for a while too.

Good work, Mr President. You've saved us all a lot of contribution money.

He got us to spend our fortune and sacrifice many lives. His activities got us to discard our ideals and shred the constitution. He was probably responsible for most all the evils we claim, but we are hardly coming out of this situation innocent or unscathed. The W regime was the group that instigated the "War on Terror" in response to the crimes of bin Laden, but I don't think the the Obama administration can or will put our Humpty Dumpty country back together.

I'd also hope that we get the full story at some point - what did OBL do after Tora Bora, and how has he stayed alive and out of sight this long?

and on edit: reading that we "have the body", I hope that it is treated with care and respect, according to the applicable customs. The chapter should be closed with all care.

Edited on Mon May-02-11 02:39 AM by iverglas
doesn't make it any less distasteful to mock any particular religion just for the hell of it.

Real live perfectly innocent people adhere to religions for reasons having mainly to do with culture and family. Mocking their religion really just isn't likely either to persuade them of the wrongheadedness of their beliefs or to enhance their regard for people and cultures other than their own.

What it is likely to do is legitimize bigotry and persecution directed at them.

Perhaps the innocent people you refer to need a dose of reality about their religious superstitions. The best thing we can do for them is to help liberate them from their religion and I am referring to Christianity as well as Islam.

Mocking their beliefs and revered personages is such an effective way of doing that, particularly when the mockery has a negative impact on their quality of life, if it doesn't actually exacerbate the harassment, discrimination and violence they are exposed to, as (and as they know full well) it is not infrequently intended to do.

I mean, it's how they get converts, isn't it??

Maybe you should take some lessons from them. Amateur. And that's a polite assessment.

Since I don't believe anything related to the invasion of these countries - I choose to put this announcement on a wait and see.

I'm surprised that this group is not already looking into probabilities. Why couldn't the superior forces of the US cpature him? Was it a boots on the ground battle scene like none that has come before this one?

Why cheer until you hear the story? Some of you might remember your own words when you wrote that he died of his kidney disease in a hide out about five, six years ago?

Whether you want to believe Obama is up to you, but consider whether Obama should believe the DOD and Intelligence or any mercenary group.

304. I have conflicted feelings about Osama's death.
Although I did not lose a loved one, I was there that fateful morning. Not a few blocks away or watching it on TV, but there at Ground Zero, or more precisely in the North Tower. The news of Osama's death brought back memories of that late summer morning. It was such a nice day. It was Tuesday and the farmer's market was in the plaza in front of the South Tower. I was looking forward to buying some fruit and coconut macaroons. Instead, the morning brought the worst terrorist attack in US history.

As much as I breath a sigh of relief knowing that Osama is no longer alive to plot further mayhem, I can't help but to feel sadness. Sadness for all those who I saw jump from the Towers' windows, for those who died on the airplanes and particularly for all those who died in my tiny town of Hoboken, NJ. Hoboken, despite being only a square mile, lost more people than any other city in NJ. More than 50 people died that day, some I knew, most I didn't. The youngest one was only 22, the oldest was in his 40s.

I see the people celebrating in front of the WH and in Times Square, but I can't rejoice with them. I cringe to think what will Al Qaeda do to retaliate. The question is not whether they will avenge Osama's death, but rather where in the world will they attack next and whether they will be stopped in enough time to prevent another 9/11. They are patient, they tried to bring down the WTC in 1993 and finally succeeded in 2001.

So yes, I'm happy that bin Laden is dead, but I fear what will his death bring next.

:-(

Somewhere in all the blather in the last hour or so I think I heard it happened a week ago and they've waited for confirmation anyway. Maybe they've known since Thursday and respectfully held back. I haven't read anything very closely, yet, but I don't remember 7 months referred to, anywhere. What conspiracy theory are you reading, or are you trying to create one?

I'm not fond of our president either, but everybody in the intelligence community wanted bin Laden dead. They won't go along with faking his death to benefit a guy they're not fond of either.

In 8 years of W's woeful, mendacious term, even the Bush administration wouldn't even fake bin Laden's death. That to me is the canary in the coal mine. No way Obama would.

said he was "overjoyed that we finally got the world's top terrorist."

I wonder how it is decided who is the "top" terrorist. Surely the only logical criterion is the number of victims. If so, bin Laden couldn't possibly be at the "top". George W. Bush, for instance, is directly responsible for the deaths of a far greater number of people.

354. LA Times on bin Laden's history
... with some data points buried on page 6 excerpted:

LA Times: Osama bin Laden, born to privilege, dies a pariah

Bin Laden might never have found refuge in Pakistan's tribal areas if it weren't for the U.S. military's ill-fated decision not to send U.S. Special Forces into Tora Bora, the labyrinthine network of caves in eastern Afghanistan where Bin Laden and Al Qaeda hid after the U.S.-led invasion in October 2001.

U.S. Gen. Tommy Franks, head of the operation in Afghanistan, gave the job of flushing out Bin Laden to a ragtag band of Afghan fighters, a move that most analysts say gave Bin Laden and his aides the opportunity to flee to Pakistan.

...

Like President Bush, Bin Laden proclaimed that whoever was not with him was his enemy. "These events have divided the world into two camps, the camp of the faithful and the camp of the infidel," he said. "Every Muslim must rise to defend his religion."

Though, Tommy Franks seems to be getting credit for what I thought to be Rumsfeld's decision-making (interference).

Tens of thousands of American and allied lives lost, potentially more than one million civillians dead, enormous expenditures that has tanked almost the entire world economy (unless you're a defence contractor or hedge fund), the erosion of civil rights and the shift from global sympathy to hatred against the U.S. in large parts of the world.

And for what? To kill one bearded guy who's haunted the U.S. like a ghost, because you have let yourself be haunted.

No body, no crime.

He's been dead for years. (If he even existed in the first place).

but now, someone in the white house did a cost/benefit analysis and found that it's a good time, economically speaking to claim OBL is dead.

On the report of his "death" MSNBC annouced that the market was to have big gains.

They also reported that the price of a barrel of oil went down.

They also reported "spontanious" turn outs in "celebration" in DC.

Who the fuck are they kidding? Could this be anymore staged? this is right up there with the "supporters" that were trucked in when the networks televised the pulling down of that statue in Baghdad.

Fuck it. Everything is a false flag, everything is a black swan, everything is a stalking horse.

Edited on Mon May-02-11 09:39 AM by LatteLibertine
the death of OBL on President Obama's.

As I understand it, President Obama quietly ordered the death of OBL be made a "priority" when he entered office. The CIA gathered the intelligence and the U.S. Navy SEALs performed the strike.

Some are speculating OBL had been living in that large fortified compound since some time after 2005. Dubyah could have issued the same order President Obama did and I think he believed OBL was a useful boogeyman to have out there.

President Obama quietly told them, "This is a top priority. Get it done." Well you see what happens when our military and intelligence are truly let go to do a job.

OBL wasn't hiding in a cave. He was living in a large fortified compound 60miles from the capital of Pakistan in a wealthy suburb. We could have "found" him earlier.

Dubyah does not deserve credit. The info gathered by the CIA for this strike was accomplished in a few months.

451. Since this was posted twice, I'm posting my response twice too.

There are already cries of outrage and calls for revenge from jihadists.

:(

"However, a senior Pakistani intelligence official said members of Pakistan's intelligence service, the ISI, were on site in Abbottabad during the operation. There was no way to immediately resolve the apparent discrepancy"

I can't help thinking the ISI on site was the three man security team assigned to Osama Bin Laden.

509. Hi, sam. How are ya doing?
Just because you're adding with your own bullshit, doesn't make his bullshit any less bullshittier.

Especially, that part about the fact that you're both arguing to stay in Afghanistan with a caveat that terrorism is a worldwide phenomena.

I'm really interested why you're not concerned about the Muslim victims of Al Qaeda, since more of them have died from terrorist attacks than all the Christians and Americans put together. (I do suspect that you really don't care about them though)

I guess that you can peddle this kind of crap when you're jacking off to pictures of Rush Limbaugh with your friends, but if you really want to make a cogent argument, you need something better than your obvious bullshit.

bragging rights maybe. Collateral for a presidency maybe. One thing is now for sure, we will never know the real truth of what went down from the chosen most important player, in this most fantastic debacle in the entire history of civilization. Unless Bin Laden left behind a convenient, diary to be dug up when needed to bolster some even more cockamamie concoction to bolster the advent of an ever more cruel fascism.

But by all means dance round the maypole, pop the corks, because a milestone has been acknowledged on our gleeful backward trek into the dark and dense jungles of the black, the trash bin of history.

It is after all Mayday....and not April fools.

525. Checking in--I was initially very disturbed that they disposed of the body so fast
Edited on Mon May-02-11 04:06 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Because it and the combination of taking him down in a quick firefight when we could have captured him and put him to real justice, seemed to prevent closure for those of us who wanted to see Osama in US custody. Then again, killing him in a firefight almost seems more deferentual to Osama's preferred fate than capturing him a la KSM.

Before this thread gets too long:

I had the chance to go down to the White House last night, but the Metro closed early. Unfortunately from what I saw the crowd became dominated by frat boys for a little bit, a few of them waving Bush Cheney signs. Then, depressingly, they roped off the crowd and defused the celebration. Perhaps its for the best -- the celebrations that broke out seemed a little drunken and unseemly for something I thought would be a happy, but somber moment. Violent shouting of "USA, USA" begins to take the tenor of a mob after a while. I blame it on being mostly a young crowd that weren't old enough to really know anything about 9-11 other than Bin Laden being a cartoon supervillain they grew up with, like the Joker. Older crowds seemed to take the news with a lot more mature attitude, although on one hand I don't believe in celebrating death, I do believe in celebrating the end of an era for the man who took credit for the attacks on the US.

I was initially very upset when I heard they disposed of the body so fast. That is not the way to defuse speculations that Bin Laden was "dead all along" (a quite reasonable interpretation at the time, given officials' seeming public disinterest, see below) or some of the wilder hypotheses that have circulated over the years.

HOWEVER, I was very much heartened by the words of Obama's HS secretary at today's press conf. That every option was considered and planned for, and that, should Bin Laden resist, the burial at sea was part of a considered method to prove "habeas corpus" (Bin Laden's corpus) without appearing to deface the body (as Wolf Blitzer mentioned was done to the Mahdi, the 19th century version of Bin Laden) or do something that is otherwise beneath Americans, at least those of us who are religious, and thereby create the appearance that we were not fully justified in offing him in a firefight, regardless of whether he is just a figurehead or actively involved.

I still don't believe that feigning disinterest in finding Bin Laden over the past ten years was anything other than another misguided Bush strategy and I don't think it helped find him. It only continued and helped promote the idea that we're in a different world shaped by his terrorism, which is exactly the sort of thing we should not give Islamists the pleasure of changing America's ways -- in this case, to promote a media attitude of casually deceiving the public in hopes of deceiving AQ in the process (when the media knew the truth that Bin Laden was out there and that finding him was still a priority). If anything, claiming that they were desperate to find him and weren't having much luck, and needed support by Pakistani tipsters, would have seemed a better tactic.

Perhaps it was all part of the state-to-state deception of Pakistan that the "conspiracy nuts" said was necessary because Pakistan was in fact funding and assisting Bin Laden in his terror efforts through the ISI. If so, then feigning disinterest in Bin Laden was probably necessary due to the level of second-guessing needed to outmaneuver a rival secret service.

The location of the Bin Laden compound definitely makes it clear that someone, not anyone in the US hopefully, but certainly our "allies" in ISI, knew about Bin Laden's plans before and after and "let it happen" on the grounds, perhaps, that a terror attack on American soil would result in more funding for US allies in the Middle East. Comments by Wolf Blitzer, Bob Baer and others seem to bear this out that there is no way someone in ISI did not know about this.

Now bracing for the inevitable response video from GOP leaders (on now) and Obama's death tape (supposedly set to come out.)

Contemplate this a while instead of crowing about state sanctioned murders...

"And empire finally, as Thucydides understood, is a disease. As Thucydides wrote, the tyranny that the Athenian empire imposed on others it finally imposed on itself. The disease of empire, according to Thucydides, would finally kill Athenian democracy. And the disease of empire, the disease of nationalism … these of course are mirrored in the anarchic violence of these groups, but one that locks us in a kind of frightening death spiral. So while I certainly fear al-Qaida, I know it’s intentions. I know how it works. I spent months of my life reconstructing every step Mohamed Atta took. While I don’t in any way minimize their danger, I despair. I despair that we as a country, as Nietzsche understood, have become a monster that we are attempting to fight."

541. What's with the Geronimo thing?
I was watching the footage when all the top officals are watching the assualt on the OBL compound and I hear the narrator say, "and the team then identified Osama Bin Laden, code named Geronimo..."

Was that really necessary? Geronimo was a great Native American leader of the Apache tribe and is revered by millions of native Americans and others. Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have code named him "Hitler" or "Attilla" or "Gumby"?

How would the public feel if it was "Osama Bin Laden, code named Lincoln?" or "Osama Bin Laden, code named Mother Teresa?"

Maybe I am being over sensitive but for me this really put a cloud over a near perfect operation. I can't help asking, how do these people view Native American heroes?

546. A big fear came into my head, did ben Laden WANTED TO BE KILLED?
It is spring in Afghanistan, winter is over, the winter wheat crop was planted last year and will be ready for harvest come June. Thus the farmers and other people in Rural Afghanistan have the most "Free Time" to begin operations. The Taliban has said they will launch an offensive, could bin Laden had seen himself as a martyr, that could be used as battle cry i.e. Remember the Alamo, Remember the Maine etc?

Bin Laden had become increasingly unimportant since 9/11, 9/11 lead to his strategic objective, to get US Troops into the Middle East AND thus to show the Moslem World that America wanted to rule the World, including the Moslem world. Bin Laden achieved that plan as to Afghanistan, and to a more limited extent in Pakistan (Iraq was a Bush II add on, a huge plus for bid Laden, but not in bin Laden's plans, which was concentrated on Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Thus, did ben Laden want to be killed? In many ways this is the perfect time of the year to be a Martyr, spring is the season in Afghanistan and Pakistan and thus general start of operations in both countries (In Winter, the people in the Mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan hole up till spring).

Just a comment on WHY we received this information so we could kill bin Laden. Remember bin Laden did NOT want to rule the World, or enrich his family by taking over the oil fields, he was a true fanatic, willing to die for what he believed in which was to drive out US influence in the Middle East. Right now, both Afghanistan and Pakistan are tender boxes ready to blow up in the face of the US, bin Laden's death maybe all that is needed to get the Radicals in both Countries to come out in force and attack US positions in both Countries. It may be all that is needed to see both countries fall to the Radicals followers of bin Laden (and in the alternative, bring out those same radicals to be killed).

This was and is a gamble, a gamble that may pay off for the US (If the radicals come out and killed off by the US) or bin Laden (if the Radicals are able to take over Pakistan and/or Afghanistan).
