1. why just a release and not a copy of the return?
didn't the clintons release a copy of their entire return while bill was in office? wasn't that were the uproar over itemizing his underwear came from? why is chimpy only releasing a few, undoubtedly well chosen, numbers? what are they hiding?

5. Their tax bill was "slightly lower" this year...
41,229 lower, to be exact. That's a little more than my husband and I earned collectively last year.

Cheney's tax bill, at $253,067, was lower than Dumbyas, even though he reported $1.3 million in adjusted gross income. In 2002, they paid $341,114 on a slightly lower income.

~sarcasm on~ So glad they're enjoying their tax cut. ~sarcasm off~

Bush paid 31% of his income in taxes, and Cheney paid 20%.

10. Tax Cuts Helped President but Far Less So the Cheneys
President Bush and his wife saved about $31,000 as a result of the tax cuts he championed, according to documents the White House released yesterday, but Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife lost nearly all of their Bush tax cuts to another levy that will soon take away part or all of the cuts from 35 million households.
Mr. Bush and Laura Bush made only parts of their 2003 tax return available, breaking with a tradition of full disclosure begun by President Jimmy Carter that Mr. Bush followed until last year. The Cheneys made their Form 1040 public, and the full tax return was given to various news organizations that requested it, including The New York Times.
Senator John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, made available only his own tax return, which he files separately from his wife, the food industry heiress Teresa Heinz Kerry.

4. Baiting the Religious Right
I think those numbers were released to win favor with the religious right. Notice that it mentioned that he gave 68,000+ to churches and charities. I bet almost any conservative or religious righter will gush and say that shows how much of a christian he is. In addition, he can now once again begin to claim he is a compassionate conservative since he gave so much of his money away.

Taxable income, yeah right whatever. I'm sure they both are utilizing every loop-hole available to them as are most of the top percentile.

9. Didn't Kennedy
refuse his salary as President since he was independently wealthy? I'm not saying bush should since he earned it (I made a funny!) but just curious.

Tax Cuts Helped President but Far Less So the Cheneys
By DAVID CAY JOHNSTON

(P)resident Bush and his wife saved about $31,000 as a result of the tax cuts he championed, according to documents the White House released yesterday, but Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife lost nearly all of their Bush tax cuts to another levy that will soon take away part or all of the cuts from 35 million households.
...
The Bushes paid 27.7 percent of their adjusted gross income in federal income taxes. The Cheneys, whose income was much larger, paid 19 percent of their adjusted gross income, though when their income from tax-exempt bonds is considered, the Cheneys' effective tax rate was 12.7 percent.

That difference shows how the Bush tax cuts, as well as changes made during the Clinton years, can make those who earn more pay a smaller share of their income in taxes than those who earn less.

The Bushes reported an adjusted gross income of $822,126, on which they paid tax of $227,490. Without the tax cuts Mr. Bush sponsored, they would have paid $30,858 more and their effective tax rate would have been about 31.4 percent, two analyses showed.

14. W's earned income from his job is 400K. Where'd his other 422K come from?
I wonder if that's what they don't want people to know.

Dick's money is mostly deferred comp from Haliburton. Shouldn't that be taxed at over 35%?

If his effective rate is 20%, clearly he's getting a ton of money from dividend and LTCG income.

15. Interest
..snip..
Their income consisted almost entirely of his $397,264 salary as president and $401,803 in taxable interest, primarily on federal government bonds and notes. Among the documents withheld by the White House were Schedule A, which itemizes most deductions, and Schedules D and E, which cover investment gains and losses.
..snip..

They claim the interest was on "federal govt bonds and notes", but since Schedule D is withheld, you really have to take their word for it. Schedule E is for passive rental income IIRC.

It was also pointed out that gw is the first President since Carter's full disclosure policy began to withhold any part of his tax return.
