Dell Employs More Overseas Than in U.S.
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGANZIUA0TD.html

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) - Computer maker Dell Inc. has more workers overseas than it does in the United States, reversing the makeup of its work force of just a year ago.

Round Rock-based Dell said it was allocating resources where growth has been fastest, including China and Japan.

"We have great opportunities outside the U.S., and as such we have built our employee base in areas that best reflect our strong growth areas," Dell spokesman Bob Kaufman said Tuesday. "Our jobs have grown all over the world, including here in the U.S."

Dell had 46,000 employees as of Jan. 30. About 22,200 of those, or 48.3 percent, were in the United States, while 23,800 people, or 51.7 percent, worked in other countries, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

1. No surprise here...
Michael Dell is a close personal friend of GWB and is one of the GOP's very top contributors, according to the Mother Jones 400. It would be a snowy day in Hades before I would buy Dell just to put more money into Michael Dell's (and the GOP's) pockets.

3. My monitor started popping and crackling yesterday morning
and got blurry, out of focus. At 1:00pm EST I called the 1-800 Dell number and within 3 minutes was on the phone with a techie in Bombay.

Between my Boston accent and his Indian accent, it was the most tortuous 45 minutes I've had in a long time. A very frustrating experience of exchanging what?....huh?.....what was that?....mumble....what?...eegads!

When all is said and done they are fast though. FedEx showed a couple of hours ago with a new monitor.

As a marine biologist I don't have to worry about my job being outsourced, but Bush covered that base by castrating the EPA and Dept of Interior. Very little ecological work going on nowadays.

4. As the world turns
20 years ago, I had to call back east (in the US) to try to to talk to an immigrant that I couldn't understand...... Now when I need tech help, I get to talk to the same guy in his native country....... Wow is this progress or what?

6. Dell makes horrible products
I am in IT and I can tell you that Dell's have a horrible service record. They also employ awful technical support. I've never seen a Dell laptop last more than a year. On the other hand HP and IBM make very good products and they stand behind their warranties. Not that they don't outsource, but they aren't greedy whores like Dell , they are at the core proud entreprenurial American companies.

10. False Statement Alert
Ofcourse everyone's experience is unique but in my 20 years of increasing computer literacy requirements, Dell has been my savior. In my book, HP is theeee worst.... Bottom line: yer on yer own! Too bad the jobs are going away though.

7. I feel dirty.
All of the machines in our library are Dells, except for a couple of rebuilt Gateways. Unfortunately, because we're a state agency, I have a feeling our purchasing options are limited, and I wouldn't doubt that Virginia would love to line the pockets of a rich repuke.

8. wave of the present
i saw some job postings the other day for all types of techie people, and as i was poised at the keyboard to shoot off a resumé i read "must relocate to india."

i know that difficult economic times lead to a "follow the jobs" immigration - hey, most of michigan moved to texas in the 80s! - but india? that's awfully far from home - too far to commute!

it is interesting, tho, that there is some need for american tech workers in india. i wonder what it means?

9. I have an iMac G3
I don't mind a company hiring foriegn workers for products to be sold in that country, but we all know that that is not what outsourcing means...

Boycott Dell
