High stakes for Bush in Iraq news conference
High stakes for Bush in Iraq news conference

By Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will try to convince increasingly sceptical Americans at a rare news conference that
he has a strategy to deal with Iraq's rising violence.

In his first prime-time news conference since just before the Iraq war in March 2003, Bush is likely to be grilled on issues ranging from his
handling of U.S. intelligence before the September 11, 2001, attacks to Middle East peace talks to the economy.

But Iraq is the theme the president will focus on. He will open the news conference with a 12-minute statement on the U.S. occupied country
which he invaded after accusing it of developing weapons of mass destruction.

No such weapons have been found. And in contrast to U.S. troops being "greeted as liberators," as Vice President Cheney said before the
war, Iraq has slipped into a spiral of violence that has caused mounting U.S. casualties.

4. I may be just as delusional as he. . .
but I think he's going to blow it. The only wild card is those imported WMD's floating around southern Iraq under the guise of humanitarian aid by CIA in trucks with Jordanian and Syrian plates. No specific link sorry but was on the boards around 11 am originally from an Iranian newspaper. Link available at http://commondreams.org.

6. i think he MIGHT blow it
i refuse to believe he can handle even softball questions.

if he takes more than 10 questions, he will fuck up somehow in a big way.

and there's nothing he can say! he has NEVER SAID ANYTHING EVER.

terror, terror, freedom, freedom, shop

tonight might be the night!

2. Grilled? Did she say grilled?
"In his first prime-time news conference since just before the Iraq war in March 2003, Bush is likely to be grilled on issues ranging from his handling of U.S. intelligence before the September 11, 2001, attacks to Middle East peace talks to the economy."

That will be the day. Bush will be spoonfed his cues by a subservient press, who will diligently write down every scripted, vapid word. If any journalist ever dared asked an unexpected -- much less difficult -- question of *, they would be barred from the White House. So the poodles would rather report frothy lies and cotton-candy spin than lose their club membership.

I'm watching Queer Eye tonight. At least Carson can ad lib his lines.

22. They were criticized up the wazoo the last time they spoon fed him.
I don't know that, considering how much they hate the
White House for condescension and other humiliations,
that they will give him his free ride. I think that this
news conference is something the WH HAS to do to 'control'
spin and it could be his handlers are more deluded than
anyone else, actually thinking he can do this. Will be
interesting to see.

7. agree
He will give a memorized prepared response regardless of what he is asked and no one will dare pin him on the fact that he is dodging the questions and press for a real answer.

8. Okay...
Take one shot for everytime he says evil doers, terror, terrorists, or 9/11. Take two when he says liberate, hate us for our freedoms, faith, or pray. Chug the whole bottle if his earpiece stops working.

9. I'd say drink if he mispronounces a word...
but that could put someone in the hospital.

How about every time he makes up a word, like "suiciders?"

12. Same old, same old.
If it's anything at all like the press conference just prior to our invasion of Iraq, he can expect such difficult questions as "Mr. President, how does your faith help you during a time like this?"

Yeah, I'm expecting some tough, unscripted questions from our press ... and I also believe in the Easter Bunny.

14. I think the reason for this press conference is his drop in the polls
or the Newsweek poll last week that shows him 7 points behind Kerry. I think that put the GOP in a panic and he's trying to pull it out now with this news conference. Hopefully it will backfire.

Don't sell him short here guys, expect him to perform like a PRESIDENT should...not on par with a monkey...or else he wins the game of low expectations...

17. what's a "high" risk when all the reporters will be asking
pre examined questions and all questions will be stupid idiot questions that a three year old would ask

The system is broken and this build up is just another example that this will be another staged event

Bush rules--no matter how we would hate it--all of the events for the past three and half years, point to that fact. The stupid prick has managed to threaten enough, or get enough of the big money corporations who own the media, on his side with promises and with actul pay backs--

Bush the idiot has us all in his evil grip

Watch

Not a one of them will break their roles.

18. I will tape it, just in case something remarkable happens
like, for instance, the whorehouse presstitutes get a spine. But I won't watch it... I'll read the thread by those (with stronger stomachs) who do watch to find out if anything remarkable DID happen.

I'm sorry, I know I'm a wimp, but my blood pressure just can't take the man straight. I need a filter.

19. Wonder if these numbers on the deaths will be brought up at all -
snips>

So far more than 670 U.S. troops have died in the conflict. Between 4,000 and 6,000 Iraqi military have died and between 8,000 and
10,000 civilians have lost their lives.

This could be a good thing -

Zogby said his polls have consistently shown that although the public is split on the war, those in the antiwar camp hold a much more intense viewpoint than those who support the effort, which means it will be hard for Bush to lay out an argument that will win over those in opposition.

snip>

Bush's weeklong absence from the nation's capital has raised the stakes for his performance in which he needs to show that he is in
command of the situation in Iraq, said a Republican congressional aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It was an unflattering suggestion that Clinton would have gotten caught with his pants down if he had been in office during 9/11.

Well let me tell you something Tombstone Boy, THIS is what YOUR President was actually DOING when the country was being attacked.

Once again, a perfect example of FACT trumping IGNORANCE.

T is for Tombstone.

T is also for TRAITOR.

And a picture is worth a thousand words.

DEAL WITH IT.

26. This won't be a real press conference
as long as he uses the seating chart approach and calls only on the reporters that are in his camp. It's a farce. I won't be able to watch anyhow, got something I have to do. But if I did, I'm afraid I might puke or break my TV........or both!
