April Marks Deadliest Period for U.S. in Iraq War - at Least 82 Troops Kil
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 04:04 PM by RedEarth

WASHINGTON (AP) - For American forces in Iraq, these are the deadliest days of the war.

At least 82 U.S. troops were killed in action in the first 12 days of April, more than 560 were wounded and two soldiers were declared missing. At least four American civilians were killed, one contractor was captured by gunmen and six others are missing and feared abducted.

The number wounded so far in April exceeds the total for any other full month of the war by more than 220.

Even the opening days of the conflict, while bloody and tense, were not as costly in American lives. In the first 12 days after invading U.S. and British forces crossed the Kuwaiti border into southern Iraq on March 20, 2003, a total of 77 U.S. troops died, including several from non-hostile causes.

All 82 of the U.S. deaths so far this month have been caused by hostile action, mainly attacks on road convoys, firefights in the Sunni strongholds of Fallujah and Ramadi and battles in and around Baghdad.

Iraqis also are dying - in their case, by the hundreds, particularly in Fallujah. About 880 Iraqis have been killed there since April 5, according to an AP count based on statements by Iraqi hospital officials, the U.S. military and Iraqi police.

8. Can you post a link?
I get #'s from

http://lunaville.org/warcasualties/Summary.aspx

They have April at 80 and probably at 83 plus by tonight.

This makes April the worst month by far. They post mostly from Cent Com and the DOD and Reuters.

I'd be interested in other sites, for comparison's sake.

3. Lunaville.org has 80 plus 3 more unconfirmed.
And over half a month left to go.

Sickening.

I'm upset that all I can find on TV is Ashcroft and banners running below.

These bastards are using the 9/11 commission testimonies to their advantage in this case.

This needs to be a major story, RIGHT NOW.

82 was the high # in November.

Will it ever end...

4. SPC Michelle Witmer (Never Forget)

Left to right, Charity, Rachel and Michelle Witmer have their picture taken in Iraq (news - web sites) in this undated family handout photo. Michelle, one of the three Wisconsin sisters serving in Iraq, was killed Friday, April 9, 2004, and the family is appealing to military leaders to prevent the two surviving sisters from being sent back after her funeral. 6. I think the Bush twins ought to take the place in Iraq of these girls
Jenna and Barb's parents and grandparents deserve to worry like many other parents and grandparents worry now and spend sleepless nights.

9. Will we see 30/day Vietnam style counts?
I didn't think it would be possible to see 100/month, it's sure to pass that this month. The Iraqi fighters are an amazing force, too bad that we couldn't have somehow arranged things so that they were on our side, or us on theirs. Alas, is was not to be.
