Poll: Public has shifted focus toward terror, war problems
War is good for re-election. Anyone here feel this Eye-Rack disturbance is being stirred up for Chimp's re-election benefit? I mean, what's a few human lives? :puke:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-04-13-top-problems_x.htm

WASHINGTON (AP) — The American public has shifted its attention toward problems like terrorism and war since last summer when more people said the nation's top problems were economic, an Associated Press poll found.

When asked in an open-ended question last July to name the most important problems facing the United States, 9% mentioned war. That number almost doubled to 17% in an AP-Ipsos Public Affairs poll taken early this month. The number of people who named terrorism has grown from 14% in July to 21% now.

The poll offers a glimpse of the nation's leading concerns as the presidential campaign intensifies between President Bush, who generally has posted stronger poll numbers on national security, and Democrat John Kerry, seen as stronger by the public on economic issues.

1. War is not always good for re-election
This looks a lot more like 1968 than 1972.

3. Tonight will be telling..
how many times he uses phrases like "They hate our freedoms", "ter-rists", "evil doers" etc..

Sorry, but my take on the American citizen is they'd elect a gerbil if you could get it to say three things:

1) I hate "ter-rists"
2) I hate Liberals
3) God Bless America

4. "They"? You Canadian? British? Australian? South African?
WE are a far more diverse and varied group of people than that. That is our strength: That we don't agree.

6. The American citizen has polled against W's optional war, of late
Yes, we are exceedingly naive; on the other hand, we don't enjoy getting robbed and murdered by our elected officials.

9. What is so sad is
it is obvious that far too many don't mind at all if YOUR "elected" officials rob and murder others... (present company excluded. ;-))

10. True, far too many accept that as "someone else's problem"
or, worse yet, support it in the spirit of "righteous" vengeance.

That's been the norm ever since the westward expansion. It's now our manifest destiny to burn every ounce of the world's fossil fuels.

11. A LOT Like 1968
Kerry should be able to win if the BFEE doesn't kill him.

7. Sometimes war is good for re-election
but this time it is not because it is obvious this is such a botch up and we were dragged into it by a lie.

12. But they're paying more attention to international stuff when: ...
Iraq has gone south on Dubya, 911 has gone south on Dubya, and the international scene is very bleak for Dubya. They're paying less attention to domestic/economic issues when: the economic indicators (as bogus as they are spun) are looking up, and the RW has introduced a host of social issues into politics. This is not good for Dubya.

13. No, I don't think this Iraq thing is being stirred up for Bush's election
Let's get serious here. It is an out of control situation, not some scripted offensive.

14. I don't think this war will benefit Bush, but...
I think he's sticking to the June 30th hand over date to make it appear that he does have an exit strategy and to counter any talk of comparisons to Vietnam.

A hasty exit from this unpopular war will play well with a lot of people.

(Doubt he'll be able to do it though. Besides, he needs to take some responsibility for rebuilding the country he just destroyed!)

16. He spoke of once the "government" is installed he
will have a security agreement. Most likely it will be a SOFA that ensures permanent bases in Iraq. I think that is why he has such a hard on for June 20. they need that agreement to keep their troops there. I guess they think it would make their bases there appear legal.

15. Bring it on
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 09:27 PM by Jack Rabbit
Bush's war on terrorism is a grotesque joke. He has not fought an honest war against terrorism, but has cynically used the September 11 attacks to invade Iraq for reasons that had nothing to do with making Americans safer from the likes of Osama bin Laden.

Saddam has no associations with terrorists and had nothing to offer them. There was no way his downfall could have improved the situation vis a vis terrorism.

In the months since Bush appeared on the deck of the Lincoln in a Halloween cotume, al Qaida has launched four attacks. Although it can't be proven, it's hard to imagine that al Qaida would have done any less if Iraq had not been invaded.

Bush's war on terrorism is a miserable failure. It shouold be exploited to our advantage.
