Memphis urges hundreds to flee ahead of flooding

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police officers went door to door Friday urging Memphis residents to leave nearly 1,000 homes expected to be inundated by a near-record flood of the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

In Missouri, meanwhile, the Coast Guard closed the Mississippi River to boat traffic around Caruthersville to protect the town's floodwall from additional pressure caused by engine wakes. The closure along a five-mile stretch could last for eight days, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

"It's going to be very difficult. We've got barges in St. Louis that need to go south and barges in New Orleans that need to go north," said Larry Daily, president of Alter Barge Lines Inc.

In Arkansas, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 were closed Friday due to flooding there. The westbound lanes of the busy highway were closed earlier this week.

4. I was over in east Arkansas today. It's a soggy mess
and I-40 is a ghost town. We got off at the exit right before the eastbound closure. The only reason we were out there, was delivering a load of rice.
