Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly announced Monday morning that he's running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Dick Lugar.

"I want to take the fight for American jobs and opportunities to the United States Senate. I want to make sure that the voices of hard working Hoosiers are heard in the U.S. Senate," Donnelly said in a video message to supporters.

In his announcement, the three-term lawmaker who represents Indiana's second congressional district located in the North Central part of the state, made a specific pitch to older voters.

1. I guess he expects Lugar to have a tough primary

Maybe the tea party crowd gives him a fighting chance.

Of course it also reduces our chances of holding his seat.

2. With the incoming 2012 Democratic wave, I think Indiana's electoral votes & senate seat
will both go to the Democrats.

The repukes are going to have a really hard time winning Indiana back for a while.

Congressman Donnelly Rated 8th Most Conservative Democrat in U.S. House of Representatives

February 26, 2010 2:16 PM

Washington, D.C. – Today, National Journal Magazine rated Congressman Joe Donnelly the 8th most conservative Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. National Journal ranks every member of Congress based on key economic, social, and foreign policy votes each year.

“Since coming to Congress, I’ve pledged to put the needs of north central Indiana first,” said Donnelly. “I am not here to vote with any particular political party—I’m here to vote on behalf of Hoosiers back home.”

This ranking is consistent with Congressman Donnelly’s established record of putting the needs of his district before political party affiliation. Earlier this year, Congressional Quarterly rated him the 13th most independent Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2009, according to their ratings formula.
