Colo. Lawmakers Urged Not to Emulate JFK
DENVER (AP) - A Roman Catholic priest caused a stir on the House floor Tuesday when he urged lawmakers to let religious faith guide their votes and ``be the antithesis of John Kennedy.''

While delivering the chamber's morning prayer, the Rev. Bill Carmody said too many politicians have followed the example of the nation's first Catholic president by pledging to separate their faith from politics.

``Almighty God, please change and convert the hearts of all the representatives in this House. May they be the antithesis of John Kennedy, may they be women and men of God, and may their faith influence and guide every vote they make,'' he said.

Rep. Alice Madden, a Democrat, took the floor to denounce the prayer, saying it was an unfair attack on the Democratic president.

1. Carmody needs to check his reality dipstick....
Since when has the Catholic Church had a dog in the fundie fight for Bush? Maybe since Opus Dei helped John Paul II to get where he is now....

The Catholic Church is in big trouble in this country, in terms of both attendance and contributions, and they go on alienating Catholics with a barely-veiled appeal to knock down the 1st Amendment?

It was the `70s when the church told Fr. Robert Drinan (who would, by today's estimation, be referred to as a "radical left" priest) that he could be a priest or he could be a Congressman. Period.

Thirty years is not a long time in the scope of history, but it certainly is in American politics....

2. Let me put it in terms anyone can understand:
The Roman Catholic Church covered up rampant sexual abuse for decades using a secret official policy of quieting the victims and simply transferring the offenders to different locations.

Carmody, kindly shut the fuck up. The RCC has NO moral perch from which to denounce anyone. Fucking hypocrites.

3. What the hell is wrong with the Catholic Church?
First the cover up of the child abuse scandals and now the constant attacks on Democrats while allowing Republican Catholics to get a pass on their hypocrisy.

5. Father Carmody may be from Colorado Springs.

The Corpus Christie parish. He leads Catholic high schoolers in picketing the local Planned Parenthood.

I like the Jesuits much better.

on edit: Damn. (Damn is short for good God damn it all to Hell) I have lost all patience with these santimonious, self righteous..., ..., sad, sad people. They do us all harm as they drag us down. God/dess give me patience. I'm all out.

8. Correct...
Colorado Springs it is--the biggest right-wing shithole in the whole US of A. I had the rotten luck of having to go there regularly to visit mt in-laws. My wife couldn't stand the place, either...

:nuke: the dump off the map, say I.

And I can't say as I find life incomplete on those grounds... CS with palm trees, no doubt. And maybe enough water.

6. backfire
As I recall the reason it took almost 200 years to have a Catholic President was the perception that he would put the wishes of Rome ahead of the needs of the US.

Push it Reverands and you get no Catholics in office.

Wonder if this could be spun to the point of absurdity and then pull out a law requiring all politicians to pledge to put reason ahead of faith?
