New stations debut with shock and rock (Maine gets Air America)
Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 06:49 AM by MaineDem
Portland's newest radio station owner announced its arrival in town Tuesday by putting shock jock Howard Stern on the air.

Nassau Broadcasting of New Jersey started airing three new formats Tuesday on Portland stations it acquired from WMTW radio group last week.

The three revamped stations are:

The Voice, at 870 AM, a station airing the syndicated liberal-slanted Air America talk radio network. The network's midday host is comedian and political commentator Al Franken.

Hooray! The Maine freepers must be apoplectic about now! :D

Edited to add: Al Franken's wife is a Portland native. Maybe that played a part. In any case this is great news.

2. As Maine goes, so goes the nation!
PleasePleasePleasePLEASE let that still be true! If I owned a station, I would be all over Air America. They'd have to let me become an affiliate just so I'd stop pestering them to death.

The word-of-mouth alone would get me a five share just for turning on the transmitter.

5. Old tape on 870 AM this morning - Kerry in Iowa
Still it was refreshing.

The old "news Radio" station had been playing a "Heartbeat sound" for the last week. Most annoying.

The FM affiliate reverted to old rock (Aerosmith, Skid Row, etc). But catching 870 AM was nice.

Hopefully I can catch some better programming during my commuting hours.
