SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Authorities say a 6-magnitude earthquake has shaken Costa Rica's capital. There are no immediate reports of casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake's epicenter was 16 miles (25 kilometers) northwest of the capital, San Jose. Its depth was 44 miles (70 kilometers).

On Jan. 8, 2009, a 6.1 quake in central Costa Rica killed at least 20 people.

2. Upgraded to 6.0, shallow and close
There is going to be some damage there if the energy went to the southeast.

4. which is worse, shallow or deep?
I always thought if it was deeper, it was more serious because that would mean the 'bigger picture' (i.e. the big plates) was shifting...

but i can see where shallow would cause more surface damage too

6. All good down here..
No reports of anyone being hurt yet, but cell service is still down. My house took a hell of a shaking though, thank God it wasn't the volcano as was my first thought...

8. That is such a relief to know. Thank you.
My kids are normally in Montezuma, but they've been in San Jose for the birth of the baby. They're going back over to the peninsula tomorrow.

9. I'm 250% positive that they are fine...
Pretty much the only casualties from earthquakes down here come from mudslides. If your family was in San Jose, they were in the best possible place to be. It's in the valley, clear of any mountain debris, and there really isn't much that is big enough to topple down here LOL.

My wife and I just had baby twin girls in Cartago last week, that's a pretty neat coincidence!

10. Twin girls!! Oh, how wonderful.
I got a message from my son-in-law confirming that everyone is fine, although it was enough of an earthquake to grab everyone's attention.

I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours. :)

By the way, we were in CR in January. I don't know if you saw the photos I posted then, but if you missed them, they're here: http://northernvisions.smugmug.com/Travel/Costa-Rica-January-2011/15666871_df5RB#1174256978_ranwT We absolutely loved it down there (especially in January when it's around zero here in Alaska).

15. Two Earthquakes Cause Major Damage in Spain
Two Earthquakes Cause Major Damage in Spain

MADRID – Two earthquakes struck southeast Spain in quick succession Wednesday, killing at least 10 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings, officials said. It was the highest quake-related death toll in Spain in more than 50 years.

The epicenter of the quakes -- with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2 -- was close to the town of Lorca, and the second came about two hours after the first, an official with the Murcia regional government said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

Dozens of injured people were being treated at the scene and a field hospital was set up in the town of about 85,000 people, officials said. About 270 patients at a hospital in Lorca were being evacuated by ambulance as a precaution after the building sustained minor damage, the Murcia regional government said.

Earthquake hits southern Spain --

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/8508047/Earthquake-hits-southern-Spain-eight-dead.html

Didn't get to post this yesterday --

Larger quake 5.3 - 220 miles sse of Madrid - about 6 miles deep

Preceded by a smaller quake 4.5 magnitude in same spot --

The quakes occurred in a seismically active area near a large fault beneath the Mediterranean Sea where the European and African continents brush past each other, USGS seismologist Julie Dutton said.

The USGS said it has recorded hundreds of small quakes in the area since 1990.

16. Certainly the Pentagon foresaw that Global Warming would create more earthquakes...
though the "earthquakes" were scrubbed from their report much as other environmental

info was scrubbed during the W regime --

And, GW will create more chaotic weather -- including increasing numbers of storms,

hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes - droughts and floods --

Melting of the glaciers will increase pressures on tectonic plates --

Note the report on the 2 Earthquakes in Spain and where they occurred ---

(See my report above on this thread) --

The quakes occurred in a seismically active area near a large fault beneath the Mediterranean Sea

where the European and African continents brush past each other,

USGS seismologist Julie Dutton said.

The USGS said it has recorded hundreds of small quakes in the area since 1990.
