87 U.S. Troops Killed in Iraq in April - More than 560 have been wounded

WASHINGTON - For American forces in Iraq (news - web sites), these are the deadliest days of the war. At least 87 U.S. troops have been killed in action so far this month, with the most recent death announced on Tuesday. Also this month, more than 560 have been wounded and two soldiers were declared missing. At least four American civilians were killed, one contractor was captured by gunmen and six others were missing and feared abducted.

The number wounded so far in April exceeds the total for any other full month of the war by more than 220.

Even the opening days of the conflict, while deadly and tense, were not as costly in American blood. In the first 13 days after invading U.S. and British forces crossed the Kuwaiti border into southern Iraq on March 20, 2003, a total of 77 U.S. troops were killed in action and 10 more died from non-hostile causes.

The toll keeps climbing. Central Command reported Tuesday that one soldier of the 1st Infantry Division was killed and another was wounded in a roadside bomb attack south of Baghdad.

8. it took years to get this high
I don't know the exact amount of time but I think it took about four years in Vietnam to hit reach the number of killed that has occurred in Iraq.

9. 56,000 U.S. TROOPS
died in Viet Nam as apposed to 560 + so far in Iraq. At this rate it would take 100 years for an equal number to die in Iraq. Indeed the casualty rate has picked up dramatically this month in Iraq. Also casualty rates varied from year to year and month to month and day to day in Viet Nam and this has been true of all wars. It`s plenty bad over there and makes me very sad. ...Oscar

10. Nice try. - U.S. war dead in Iraq exceed early Vietnam years

U.S. war dead in Iraq exceed early Vietnam years

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. death toll in Iraq has surpassed the number of American soldiers killed during the first three years of the Vietnam War, the brutal Cold War conflict that cast a shadow over U.S. affairs for more than a generation.

A Reuters analysis of U.S. Defense Department statistics showed Thursday that the Vietnam War, which the Army says officially began on Dec. 11, 1961, produced a combined 392 fatal casualties from 1962 through 1964, when American troop levels in Indochina stood at just over 17,000.

By comparison, a roadside bomb attack that killed a soldier in Baghdad Wednesday brought to 397 the tally of American dead in Iraq, where U.S. forces currently number about 130,000 troops – the same number reached in Vietnam by October 1965.

The casualty count for Iraq apparently surpassed the Vietnam figure last Sunday, when a U.S. soldier killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack south of Baghdad became the conflict's 393rd American casualty since Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 20.

11. I was not "trying "anything.
I guess I`m one of the lucky guys who got to serve 2 tours there in 1968 and 1969 with time out for getting my guts all shot up. There may have been troops there as early as 1961 but we have had troops in Iraq at least since 1991. The war in VIET NAM STARTED IN 1965 I thought. Everyone said it lasted 10 years and ended in 1975. That`s what I was going by. ...Oscar

13. Does the wall include "nonhostile" deaths?
I really don't know.

How about mercenaries and other "civilians"?

15. It is made up of all military deaths, armed forces
Unlike the "cleansing" of the lists by the CHIMPANZEE and his Goebbels creatures. who want to hold down the number of deaths so the sheep don't get excited.

Apparently now, you need a bullet throught the head to be counted as a KIA. If you die when a truck overturns after being shot up, the press and Rumsfeld won't count you.

These young men and women are pawns of the NeoCons.

USED UP AND THROWN AWAY.

7. That makes 6.2 young lifes lost a day
I know it sounds terrible seeing these numbers but at that rate there might be 186 young lifes lost in just 1 month. Just horrible.
