During the visit, his first to Iraq since December, Myers will discuss security issues with an Italian commander near the southern city of Nassiriya.

Myers, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, was welcomed to Camp Mittica by Italian Brigadier General Gian Marco Chiarini, who heads an army brigade that includes about 3,000 Italian troops responsible for security in Nassiriya.

Myers flew to the airbase at Tallil in Iraq aboard a U.S. military C-17 cargo plane.

Earlier in Kuwait City, Myers said the U.S.-led coalition occupying Iraq was committed to bringing rebel Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to justice but acknowledged his capture could increase violence on a temporary basis.
