Navy names ship after labor activist Cesar Chavez

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The U.S. Navy has named one of its newest ships after Mexican-American labor organizer Cesar Chavez, officials said Wednesday.

The decision was an ideal fit for the latest in the Lewis and Clark class of ships, which bear the names of legendary pioneers and explorers, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said in a statement.

"Cesar Chavez inspired young Americans to do what is right and what is necessary to protect our freedoms and our country," he said. "The Cesar Chavez will sail hundreds of thousands of miles and will bring support and assistance to thousands upon thousands of people. His example will live on in this great ship."

In 1962, Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association, which grew into the United Farm Workers.

5. Think Governor LePage of Maine will let the ship dock there?

He takes down a pro-labor painting, what the hell would he do with the USS Cesar Chavez in one of his state's ports?

7. I am not sure he would like it.
I haven't done any research on his feelings about the military, he might have thought it a real honor.

just for the record (and realizing there is no chance of it anyway) i don't want any piece of military equipment named after me.

10. He was in the Navy, however, when he was very young. He probably felt some bond with that experience

As for the really deadly weapons they have, they seem to have too much fun giving them "clever," wry names, like "Daisy Cutter" and whatever else they've got. Hideous.

IF they slowed down long enough to think it all over, they'd probably go insane. Who could REALLY want to kill so many people, anyway?

Keep your fingers crossed you never see one named "ret5hd sends greetings" to wipe out yet another million people.

Looks as if the wingers got their wishes from a few years back: they've turned Iraq into something much closer to a sheet of glass than it was.

On edit:
It occurred to me that people who have struggled so very hard in their own lives, have suffered, have been beaten and kicked, abused, mistreated, and despised probably are far less ready to harm other people than those who've been heavily insulated all their lives from real trouble. He probably would be far less sadistic than many squishy soft US Americans who've never been on the receiving end of unchecked hostility.

The big picture, that's what Chavez was about.

22. Thank you. I really had to read the title twice, even a third time before I
clicked because it seems so surreal that the Navy would choose thusly.
