Patriot Act Extension Agreement Reached By Congressional Leaders
Source: Huff Po

WASHINGTON -- Top congressional leaders agreed Thursday to a four-year extension of the anti-terrorist Patriot Act, the controversial law passed after the Sept. 11 attacks that governs the search for terrorists on American soil.

The deal between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner calls for a vote before May 27, when parts of the current act expire, according to officials in both parties who spoke on condition of anonymity. The idea is to pass the extension with as little debate as possible to avoid a protracted and familiar argument over the expanded power the law gives to the government.

Support for the extension was unclear. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., wanted tighter restrictions on the government's power and may seek to amend it. In the House, members of the freshman class elected on promises of making government smaller were skeptical.

4. Chalk up another win for the Police State.
Every day that passes that this abomination of a law sits on the books is a bad day for our republic.

5. This caught my eye!
"The idea is to pass the extension with as little debate as possible to avoid a protracted and familiar argument over the expanded power the law gives to the government."

Why would they want to avoid debate?

"...tighter restrictions on the government's power..."

How could ANY of them argue against that, and not look like a big hypocrite.

19. Name change.
The Constitution is currently named the Constipation because our government doesn't give a shit about We the People.

That other document is officially the Bill of Goods.

Nothing more to add.

10. Horse puckey! Leahy and the tea baggers will vote for it. This is mere posturing for the hometown
press. The vote will be overwhelmingly in support of the police state.

12. I wonder what the fiscal impact of the PATRIOT Act has been.
Because if Paul Ryan, John Boehner, etc. are really honest about being deficit hawks...well?

17. Bin Laden won . . .
He must be laughing himself silly from his watery grave. He has completely destroyed the American way of life and we don't even realize that we have given into the constant state of fear the terrible events of 9/11 have ushered in.

I'm not saying that better cooperation between the various agencies, interoperability of systems, etc. aren't a prudent thing to do. But the unconstitutional power grab of warrant less wiretaps, indeterminate detention without charge, no speedy trial, etc. must go.

If we don't rid ourselves of this stain upon our democracy we deserve to go to the dustbin of history.
