Unexploded device discovered in Nash County

NASH COUNTY (WTVD) -- Authorities in Nash County are investigating what appears to be an unexploded device.

They say someone uncovered the device just west of Middlesex on Driver Road shortly after 11 a.m. Monday.

Some have said an unexploded handgrenade. Details are short at this time.

3. Have to wonder if the hand grenade is just something that's been lying around
since the Vietnam era or if it's more recent and whether or not it's part of some arsenal of some secret group plotting the overthrow of the U.S. government or other acts of terrorism. Hope they are able to retrieve it safely and dispose of it so that no one is harmed.

I'm not an expert on grenades but the ones I've seen, all have a pin holding a "spoon" in place, and when you pull that pin and the spoon falls off, that's when the grenade is armed and set to explode in a number of seconds. So if it's an intact, non-corroded grenade with pin and spoon still attached, there should be no problem safely retrieving it and disposing of it.

The thing is, no one should have a grenade lying around. Any more than a person should have a machine gun or a LAW or what have you lying around. So I hope they are able to find out where it came from.
