CNBC Anchor Mark Haines Dies Unexpectedly at Age 65
Published: Wednesday, 25 May 2011 | 9:59 AM ET Text Size By: CNBC.com

Haines, founding anchor of CNBC's morning show "Squawk Box," was co-anchor of the network's "Squawk on the Street" program, providing insight and commentary sometimes humorous and occasionally acerbic.

CNBC President Mark Hoffman called Haines a "building block" of the financial networks' programming. Hoffman said Haines died at his home.

"With his searing wit, profound insight and piercing interview style, he was a constant and trusted presence in business news for more than 20 years," Hoffman said in a statement to CNBC employees. "From the dotcom bubble to the tragic events of 9/11 to the depths of the financial crisis, Mark was always the unflappable pro.

"Mark loved CNBC and we loved him back. He will be deeply missed."

7. I'd assume you are talking about the Erin Burnett thing
...from last summer where he made a sexist comment in jest. Here's how they parted ways a few weeks ago...

Like any grandfather who has a streak of comedy in him, he said stuff that crossed the line a few times. In the grand scheme of things he was the flavor that made CNBC interesting.

He never backed down from a CEO and has been quite vocal about holding the feet of those who took TARP money to the fire.

10. He doesn't sound well in that clip and didn't she refer to his "new diet'?
Sounds like he may have had heart trouble...

11. He was showing his age, no doubt.
They've mentioned his strange diet (Cheetos and ketchup is what the chap stick is about in that clip) and extreme back pain quite a bit this morning.

15. Very sad that he couldn't have gotten this diagnosed earlier.
It makes me wonder. Don't these people get checkups? Don't they seek out medical care when they have symptoms? They obviously have health care insurance. Why don't they get it?

20. I don't think it was an issue of being diagnosed.
His dietary quirks were fodder for that show quite often.

12. He was the best part of that show! The clip at the link is
a fitting tribute to his character!

R.I.P. Mr Hoffman.

13. He will be missed...he was the best of CNBC.
One of the "truth tellers." Sad to lose his voice and wisdom of his years of experience not sucking up to the Wall Streeters and Banksters.

18. What a loss. This was one of the few reporters that would challenge those

with a right-wing supply-side focus on the air, not let them get away with just spouting the crap that no one else would question. He never forgot his roots. He wasn't perfect, but I suspect no one is.

He and Erin were the only reason I ever turned up the volume on that channel, and it went back down when they were gone.

Rest in peace Mr. Haines, and thank you for your work.

21. That's what I liked most about him, he just didn't care what people thought
He was objective enough to both piss off Barney Frank enough for him to say he wouldn't come back on the show and still repeatedly do what you are talking about with the right wing stuff.

19. A gem shining from a pool of liquid manure.
Haines was a good and objective veteran anchor. All condolences to his family in this sad time.
