Udall wants changes to Patriot Act
Source: Durango Herald

U.S. Sen. Mark Udall will vote against extending the Patriot Act this week unless Congress makes several key changes, he said Tuesday.

Udall, D-Colo., voted against the original Patriot Act in the days after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

“I thought then that it was being rushed through the Congress,” Udall said. “Ten years later, I have the same concerns.”

The law gives police and spy agencies broad surveillance powers, and Udall is especially concerned about three provisions that soon expire but could be extended for four years.

2. I wish more Democrats would take this stand.
They won't, of course, as they don't want to be seen as "weak on terra" as per the Party Bosses.

3. If ever there were a time for
a "secret hold" or a filibuster, this is types of thing i would want it used on.

But I forget. Democrats Don't do that. They just vote, instead of using any parliamentary trick they can to delay, obfuscate, and otherwise prevent legislation from passing. Thats only for Republics.

5. Meet the new boss...

7. No more fucking patriot act.
10 years of a fear-based police state is enough. Over 1,000,000 Americans have had their records spied on by the government with no warrant.

40. Sorry, but 10 years of a fear-based police state IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
The Powers That Be want you to be afraid, they want you to be cowed and they do not want you to question authority or even imagine you have a voice. The "Patriot Act" is institutionalized American-branded fascism wrapped up in red, white and blue packaging.

41. Absolutely true!

The fascists have been tightening their grip on the levers of the state since the puppet Reagan was president. Our form of governance is known among political scientists as "Inverted Totalitarianism". <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverted_totalitarianism>. I recommend giving this a read to get a handle on what is occurring...

Russ Feingold. The final vote was 99-1.

26. I stand corrected. The senate roll call vote on the Patriot Act in 2001 had one not voting, Mary
Landrieu of LA. The final vote was 98-1 with Russ Feingold the lone dissenter. See link below.

Udall is not only my Senator, but was my Congressman when he was in the House. He's a good guy.

Wish I could say as much about our other senator. Bennett should never have been elected.

...Yet I bet the media will let a reissuance of the Patriot Act fly right under the radar with no coverage or debate at all.

30. Changes?
Honestly, it's horrible. Making changes to a law implies that it's almost right, but needs to be refined. This law is poor, period. Nothing about it works and it needs to be scrapped. End of story.
